Relationship between Selected Personality Traits and Performance under Pressure in Sports

Abstract:

Tato práce se zaměřila na zhodnocení vztahu mezi výkonem pod tlakem v orientačním běhu a vybranými vlastnostmi: rysovou úzkostí, na sebe a na veřejnost zaměřeným sebeuvědomováním, narcismem a strachem z negativního hodnocení. Práce vychází z principu rysové aktivace (trait activation), který předpokládá, že vlastnosti jsou aktivovány v situacích, které jim poskytují relevantní možnosti. Cílem této studie bylo otestovat relevanci výše zmíněných vlastností pro situaci podávání výkonu pod tlakem na úrovni republikových závodů v orientačním běhu. Vzorek zahrnoval 43 českých dorosteneckých a juniorských závodníků. Každý účastník vyplnil osobnostní dotazník a zúčastnil se dvou experimentálních úkolů (situace s nízkým a vysokým tlakem). Pro každého jednotlivce byl dále vypočten rozdíl mezi jeho výkonem v situaci s nízkým tlakem a jeho výkonem v situaci s vysokým tlakem v porovnání s výkony ostatních účastníků. Byl posuzován vztah mezi tímto rozdílovým skórem a uvedenými vlastnostmi. Účastníci, kteří uváděli vyšší míru narušení kon-centrace (faktor rysové úzkosti) dosahovali horších výkonů v situaci s vysokým tlakem v porovnání se situací s nízkým tlakem. Toto zjištění podpořilo očekávaný negativní vztah mezi rysovou úzkostí a výkonem pod tlakem. Možné intervence pro sportovce a jejich trenéry jsou diskutovány. Obdobný negativní vztah k výkonu pod tlakem byl dále naznačen u somatického faktoru rysové úzkosti a sociálního zapadnutí (faktor na veřejnost zaměřeného sebeuvědomování). Nicméně pro podpoření tohoto vztahu je třeba dalšího výzkumu. Žádná další měřená vlastnost se neukázala být relevantní pro výkon pod tlakem v orientačním běhu.

Abstract:

This thesis focused on the evaluation of the relationship between performance under pressure in orienteering and selected personality traits: trait anxiety, private and public self-consciousness, narcissism, and fear of negative evaluation. It was based on the trait activation approach that assumes that traits become activated in situations providing trait-relevant cues. The aim of this study was to test the relevance of the above-mentioned traits to performance under pressure that is perceived by athletes at the national level of orienteering competitions. The sample consisted of 43 Czech youth and junior orienteering runners. Each participant fulfilled a personality questionnaire and participated in two experimental tasks (low and high pressure conditions). For each participant, the difference between the performance in the low pressure condition and the performance in the high pressure condition compared with the other participants’ performances was counted. The relationship between this performance difference and the traits was then evaluated. Participants high on the Concentration Disruption factor of trait anxiety were found to perform worse in the high pressure condition compared to the low pressure condition. This finding supported the hypothesized negative relationship between trait anxiety and performance under pressure. Possible interventions for runners and their coaches are discussed. A similar negative relationship to performance differences between the low and the high pressure conditions was indicated for the Somatic factor of trait anxiety and the Social Fit factor of public self-consciousness. However, more research is needed to support this relationship. None of the other traits were found to be relevant to performance under pressure in orienteering.
