Religious Minorities in Poland

Abstract:

This work deals with the situation of the 3 biggest religious minorities in Poland: the Polish Autocephalous Orthodox Church, the Jehovah?s Witnesses in Poland and the Evangelical-Augsburg Church in Poland. Each of these churches was given their own chapter divided into 3 parts: the general overview where one can find a brief introduction of their beliefs as well as their early history as a religion, their history in Poland with their defining moments and turning points from the moment they arrived to Poland to the modern times, and their situation in Poland today where above some time was dedicated into analysing the way how they deal with the education of their youth. Regarding the defining moments and turning points of the religions, we found that the Orthodox Church had the oldest tradition in the country and for most of the time the difference in the number of followers wasn?t very big. Both the Orthodox Church and the Lutherans flourished during the ?Golden Freedom? time, but with the Counter-Reformation strengthening up they were demonised, which considerably damaged their position. This feeling was empowered during the partition of Poland, where Catholicism took on the role of the unifier of the country. Lastly there was the World War II, where with the Ribbentrop-Molotov pact the USSR annexed a territory which was inhabited by a great amount of Orthodox and after the war the deportation of Germans from Poland further reduced the number of Lutherans. The Jehovah?s Witnesses on the other hand went through a different experience having to form and strengthen their position a through 2 world wars. In the end however they came out of the communist times with the best result out of the three. Today the three churches keep making the best to educate their youth. In order to do that they use apart from the normal means also the religious education at school preferring religion to ethics and working hard to provide education of their own religion in the regions, where it would normally be hard to do so.

Abstract:

Tato práce se věnuje třem největším náboženským menšinám v Polsku: Polská pravoslavná církev, Svědkové Jehovovi v Polsku a Evangelicko-augsburská církev v Polsku. Každé z těchto církví byla věnována vlastní kapitola rozdělená do tří částí: všeobecný přehled, kde je možné nalézt krátký popis jejich víry a počátků církve, jejich dějiny v Polsku, s definujícími momenty a zlomovými body od chvíle, kdy dorazily do Polska do moderní doby, a jejich dnešní situaci v Polsku, kde především byl věnován čas analýze způsobu, kterým vychovávají svoji mládež. Ohledně definujících momentů a zlomových bodů náboženství, jsme nalezli, že pravoslavná církev měla v zemi nejdelší tradici a že během dlouhé doby rozdíl v počtu věřících nebyl tak markantní. Jak pravoslavná církev, tak i luteráni prosperovali během věku ?Zlaté svobody?, ale když protireformace začínala nabírat na síle, podlehli démonizaci, která výrazně poškodila jejich pozici. Tento pocit byl umocněn během dělení Polska, kde se katolictví ujalo role sjednotitele země. Na závěr tu máme Druhou světovou válku, kde díky paktu Ribbentrop-Molotov SSSR anektovalo území, které bylo z velké části obývané pravoslavným obyvatelstvem, a po válce deportace Němců z Polska ještě více snížila počet luteránů. Na druhé straně Svědkové Jehovovi prošli odlišnou zkušeností, když se museli formovat a upevnit svou pozici během dvou světových válek. Nakonec však vyšli po pádu komunismu ze všech tří církví relativně nejlépe. Dnes se tyto tři církve při výchově své mládeže snaží udělat vše, co je v jejich silách. K tomu využívají vedle svých obvyklých prostředků také výuku náboženství ve škole, přičemž dávají přednost výchově náboženství před etikou, a tvrdě pracují, aby poskytli výchovu vlastního náboženství v regionech, kde by za obvyklých podmínek bylo velmi těžké tak učinit.
