North versus South: Margaret Hale versus Elizabeth Bennet

Abstract:

This bachelor's thesis compares the two main protagonists of the novels Pride and Prejudice (Elizabeth Bennet), by Jane Austen, and North and South (Margaret Hale), by Elizabeth Gaskell. The context of the 19th century-in which both novels were published-is reflected in the characters' positions and attitudes. The comparison of the two literary characters is based on insight into historical trends, events, and the culture and society of the Regency (Austen's period) and Victorian Eras (Gaskell's period). The thesis ultimately argues that due to the notable differences between P&P and N&S, Gaskell's North and South is not a case of plagiarism, as some scholars contend. On the contrary, Gaskell's effort is in some senses superior when one recognizes her more profound examination of industrialization, social class, and human tragedy-themes that do not receive the same deep consideration in Austen's novel.

Abstract:

Cílem této bakalářské práce je srovnání dvou hlavních postav z knih Pýcha a předsudek (Elizabeth Bennetová) od autorky Jane Austenové a Sever a jih (Margaret Haleová) od Elizabeth Gaskellové, a odhalení toho, jak se doba a společnost 19. století, ve kterém byly obě knihy vydány, promítá v jejich chování a postojích. Srovnání těchto dvou literárních postav je založeno na porozumění historických trendů, událostí, kultury a společnosti doby regentství (doba Austenové) a doby viktoriánské (doba Gaskellové). Bylo dosaženo závěru, že Sever a jih není plagiát, jak mohou někteří odborníci tvrdit, protože rozdíly mezi těmito knihami jsou příliš zřetelné. Je to právě naopak - dílo Gaskellové by mohlo být v některých směrech považováno za podrobnější, pokud čtenář pochopí její snahu důkladně vykreslit a prozkoumat industrializaci, sociální vrstvy a lidskou tragédii, což jsou témata, kterým není v díle Austenové věnována stejná pozornost.
