Selected attributes of the Absolute in the tradition of Neoplatonism and early Christianity: The ascent of the soul to the Absolute

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá výstupem k absolutnu v novoplatónské a raně křesťanské tradici. Zdrojem zkoumání je učení novoplatónika Plótína a učitele církve sv. Augustina. Cílem práce je srovnání jejich pojetí výstupu k absolutnu. Pro srovnání budou v pramenech obou autorů hledány především jejich názory a stanoviska k přirozenosti duše. Bude zkoumáno, jakým způsobem je duše k absolutnu vztažena, zda je zaměření duše k výstupu její nezcizitelnou vlastností, jakým způsobem duše poznává aboslutno i způsob výstupu a jeho dovršení.

Abstract:

This thesis examines the concept of ascent to the Absolute in the Neoplatonic and early Christian traditions. The investigation draws from the teachings of the Neoplatonist Plotinus an the Church Father St. Augustine. The aim of the thesis is to compare the approaches of Plotinus and Augustine regarding the ascent to the Absolute. The primary focus will be on examining their perspectives and viewpoints on the nature of the soul. The study investigates how the soul is related to the Absolute, how it attains knowledge of the Absolute, whether the inclination towards ascent is an inherent characteristic of the soul, and the process of the ascent itself and it's completion.
