Regional identity of inhabitants and the continuity of a socio-historical development

Abstract:

Regionální identita obyvatelstva je důležitým fenoménem, který spoluutváří konkrétní podobu jednotlivých regionů. Význam tohoto fenoménu spočívá především ve skutečnosti, že dopomáhá lidem hledat své místo ve složitě strukturovaném světě. Disertační práce vychází z tezí, které chápou regionální identitu obyvatel jako složitý, dynamický a dlouhodobě se vyvíjející proces. Jedním z klíčových aspektů tohoto procesu je jeho kontinuita či diskontinuita. Ta zpravidla mívá vlivem obecného historického vývoje společnosti, stejně tak jako vlivem regionálních specifik tohoto vývoje, v různých regionech různý charakter, který podmiňuje aktuální podobu studovaného fenoménu. Disertační práce staví do vzájemného protipólu dva regiony dichotomicky se lišící kontinuitou socio-historického vývoje (region s kontinuálním vývojem vs. region s přerušenou kontinuitou vývoje) a v rámci těchto regionů se pokouší o výzkum aktuální podoby regionální identity zdejších obyvatel. V první části disertační práce jsou diskutována teoretická východiska, přičemž vycházíme z konstruktivistických myšlenek nové regionální geografie. Následuje aplikační část, ve které jsou empiricky hodnoceny zásadní dimenze regionální identity obyvatelstva, a to v případě zájmových regionů. Zde jsou charaktery těchto dimenzí vycházejících z díla finského geografa Paasiho vzájemně komparovány. Výsledné poznatky dokumentují rozdílnou úroveň zkoumaného fenoménu v zájmových územích. S jistou rezervou lze konstatovat, že poznatky výzkumu potvrzují význam kontinuity vývoje regionálních společenství pro pozitivní využívání regionu v procesu utváření identit těchto společenství.

Abstract:

Regional identity of inhabitants is a key phenomenon which, together with other factors, creates a specific form of regions. The importance of the phenomenon lies especially in the fact that it helps people to find their place in the intricately structured world. The essential concept embedded in the dissertation understands the regional identity of inhabitants as a complex and dynamic process evolving over a long period of time. One of the crucial aspects of the process is its continuity or discontinuity. The continuity or discontinuity takes different forms in different regions due to historical development of society as well as regional particularities of this development. These forms influence the contemporary character of the phenomenon under study. The dissertation contrasts two dichotomous regions. These regions differ mainly in the continuity of socio-historical development (region with continual development vs. region with interrupted continuity of development). In these regions the thesis tries to research the current regional identities of their inhabitants. In the first part, the dissertation discusses the theoretical framework, which is based in the constructivist ideas of the new regional geography. This is followed by the empirical part assessing the essential aspects of the regional identity of inhabitants in the regions under study. The aspects, which are based in the work of the Finnish geographer Paasi, are mutually compared. The research findings present different levels of the regional identity of inhabitants in the regions under study. It should be possible to conclude that the findings confirm the importance the continuity of the development of regional societies plays in the positive use of the region in the creation of identities of these societies.
