The learning styles of adult learners of english and their examination results

Abstract:

Disertační práce se zabývá problematikou stylů učení dospělých studentů anglického jazyka (zaměstnanců Armády České republiky) v korelaci s jejich úspěšností / neúspěšností u závěrečné zkoušky z anglického jazyka podle STANAG 6001. Styly učení vychází z osobnosti jedince, tedy z kombinace jeho osobnostních rysů (typů) a jsou dále závislé na kvalitativní úrovni mnoha složek kognitivního stylu jedince. Styly učení jedince se mění a jsou odlišné nejen pro konkrétní vyučovací předmět, ale i v případech, jedná-li se o dílčí průběžné prověrky nebo o závěrečné zkoušení. Z pohledu našeho výzkumného problému jsme se snažili zjistit, zdali u vhodně zvoleného autorského modelu stylů učení a jeho diagnostického nástroje lze adaptací dotazníkových položek cíleně pro vyučovací předmět anglický jazyk diagnostikovat, podle výše skórů jednotlivých položek a konkrétních stylů učení, studijní úspěšnost / neúspěšnost dospělých studentů u zkoušky z anglického jazyka. Styly učení studentů anglického jazyka byly v první fázi zjišťovány adaptovanými položkami dotazníku ILS (angl. Inventory of Learning Styles) Holanďanů Vermunta a Rijswijka (1989). Po prvním i druhém předvýzkumu bylo však nezbytné formálně adaptované položky pro anglický jazyk u dvou ze čtyř diagnostikovaných stylů učení (s orientací na pochopení učiva a neřízený) nahradit položkami obsahově zcela novými, které byly směrovány na zjišťování převážně stavů osobnosti a kvalitativní úrovně vybraných složek kognitivního stylu studentů. Finálním dotazníkem s těmito obsahově psychodiagnostickými položkami u výše zmíněných dvou stylů učení bylo možné diagnostikovat s pravděpodobností vyšší než 90 % úspěšnost / neúspěšnost dospělých studentů u závěrečné zkoušky z anglického jazyka podle STANAG 6001.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with the learning styles of adult learners of English (employees of the Army of the Czech Republic), in relation to their success/failure in the final STANAG 6001 English language exams. The learning styles are based on an individual’s personality, which is a combination of their personality traits (types) and also depend on the level and quality of many components of an individual’s cognitive style. An individual’s learning styles change and are different, not only for a specific subject area but also in relation whether they are preparing for a half-year test or final exam. From the perspective of our research problem, we tried to determine whether, through the adaptation of a suitably chosen author’s model of learning styles and its questionnaire to one subject (English language), it would be possible to predict the success/failure of adult learners before the STANAG 6001 English language exams according to their scores for single questionnaire items and particular learning styles. The learning styles of the English language students were surveyed by means of an adapted version of the ILS (Inventory of Learning Styles) questionnaire created by the Dutch researchers Vermunt and Rijswijk (1989). After the first and also the second administration of the adapted questionnaire to our students, it was necessary to replace items that had been formally adapted for the English language in two out of four learning styles (focused on understanding the curriculum and undirected) with items with brand new content. These new items were mainly designed to detect the personality states and the quality and level of selected components of an individual’s cognitive styles. By means of the final questionnaire, with mainly psychodiagnostic items concerning the two above-mentioned learning styles, we were able to predict with a probability of greater than 90% the success/failure of our respondents in the STANAG 6001 English language exams.
