Mapping selected forest structural indicators by means of terrestrial and mobile laser scanning

Abstract:

In the last two decades, novel terrestrial-based laser scanning technologies for the three-dimensional capture of forest states have been introduced. These technologies allow us to measure and reconstruct different parts of forest ecosystems in a three-dimensional space on a sub-twig scale. The achievable high accuracy and aforementioned level of detail provide us with a wide range of possibilities for forest research and practice. Forest ecological research has recently advanced as well, and it is increasingly able to accommodate high-resolution data produced by laser scanning technologies. However, when it comes to the mapping of specific ecological indicators, further research is needed to understand the benefits of these technologies. In this dissertation, we will focus on the mapping of different forest characteristics, which have high relevance for forest ecology and management. We particularly investigate the options of mapping individual tree dimensions and tree species of living trees as well as of standing and downed dead trees, aiming at selected structural parameters of deadwood. We will focus on different aspects of data acquisition to achieve a 100% tree (living or dead) detection rate that would be reachable independently of forest structure and complexity. Tree parameters such as diameter at breast height, tree height, and biomass will also be addressed. The research will be conducted across different development stages of the forest. A collaboration with ecological research groups at the faculty will be established to exploit the options for the broader use of these findings. In summary, this dissertation aims to develop methodologies for the acquisition of different tree parameters and ecological indicators using terrestrial and mobile laser scanners and thus better bridge modern data acquisition technologies with forest ecological research. Such an interdisciplinary focus holds the promise of achieving high-quality scientific publications.
