Temperature, thermal exposure and thermal comfort in urban landscape

Abstract:

Nadměrné teplo v urbánní krajině se v souvislosti s oteplováním a rostoucí extremitou klimatu stává stále větším problémem i v podmínkách mírného klimatu střední Evropy. Současné přístupy ke studiu a redukci nadměrného tepla jsou však mnohdy nekoncepční a/nebo nepostihují problematiku v její celé šíři. Habilitační práce se na základě dlouhodobého systematického výzkumu zabývá časoprostorovou složkou teploty vzduchu, povrchové teploty, tepelné expozice, tepelného pocitu a tepelného komfortu ve městech středoevropského regionu. Nad rámec klimatologické perspektivy proto poskytuje komplexnější pohled na problém nadměrného tepla v urbánní krajině. První část práce je věnována výzkumu v oblasti aplikace konceptu místních klimatických zón (LCZ) ve městech (středo)evropského regionu; analyzovány jsou rozdíly teploty vzduchu, povrchové teploty a vlhkosti vzduchu mezi třídami LCZ a teplotní variabilita v rámci tříd LCZ. Vyhodnoceny jsou rovněž předpokládané změny v počtech vybraných charakteristických dní v jednotlivých LCZ ve druhé polovině 20. století a v průběhu 21. století. Druhá část práce prezentuje výzkum v oblasti časoprostorové proměnlivosti tepelné expozice, tepelných pocitů, tepelného komfortu a souvisejícího stresu z tepla ve městě, které jsou hodnoceny především v kontextu místa a v souvislosti s prvky modré a zelené infrastruktury.

Abstract:

On the background of global warming and of growing extremity of the climate, urban heat load is becoming an increasing problem even in the temperate climate of Central Europe. Current approaches to research on urban heat load are frequently non-conceptual or do not address the problem comprehensively. The habilitation thesis results from a long-term systematic research and deals with spatiotemporal patterns of air temperature, land surface temperature, thermal exposure and thermal comfort in urban areas in Central European environment. Beyond the “classical” approaches of urban climate research, it provides a more complex approach to urban heat load in urban landscape. The first part of the thesis deals with the application of the concept of local climate zones (LCZ) in urban and suburban landscape in the Central European region; it analyzes the differences in air temperature, surface temperature and air humidity between LCZ classes (interzonal differences) and within individual LCZ classes (intrazonal variability). It further provides an assessment of recent trends and a projection of expected changes in summer climate indices in LCZs in the latter half of the 20th century and during the 21st century. In the second part, the thesis deals with spatiotemporal variability of heat exposure, thermal sensations, thermal comfort and related heat stress in urban areas, with particular focus on the role of elements of blue and green infrastructure.
