Origin of net-winged beetle diversity in tropics

Abstract:

Brouci čeledi Lycidae (Coleoptera) představují druhově velmi početnou skupinu, která obsahuje více než 4300 popsaných druhů z celého světa. Největší druhová rozmanitost byla zaznamenána v tropických deštných lesích a odhaduje se, že to jen zlomek skutečného počtu druhů. Současný trend, kdy se zvětšují území zasažená odlesňováním, by mohl vést ke zničení ekosystémů a následným masivním vymíráním druhů. To platí zejména pro brouky čeledi Lycidae, kteří mají specifické biologické nároky a omezenou schopností kolonizovat nová stanoviště. Proto je důležité lokalizovat místa s unikátní druhovou skladbou a chránit je. Pokud se nám podaří pochopit procesy vedoucí ke speciaci, případně proces utváření společenstva u čeledi Lycidae, pak by bylo by možné je extrapolovat i na jiné skupiny hmyzu. Tato disertační práce spojuje šest studií zaměřených na Mülleriánské mimikry, sexuální dimorfismus, molekulární fylogenezi, taxonomii a fylogeografii brouků s omezenými disperzními schopnostmi. Tématem první studie byl rod Dilophotes, který představuje pozoruhodný příklad Mülleriánské mimikry. Pomocí molekulární fylogeneze jsem identifikoval blízce příbuzné druhy, které nelze delimitovat pouze na vnějších morfologických znacích. Následně jsem identifikoval sexuálně dimorfické samce a samice do druhu. Kromě toho, jsem se zaměřil i na rekonstrukci ancestrálních území a datování fylogeneze. Studovaná skupina se rozšířila z kontinentální Asie během posledních 70 miliónů let směrem na Malajský poloostrov a Velké Sundy. Druhá studie se zabývá tribem Calochromini, který byl entomology přehlížen po desetiletí a jeho klasifikace byla ve značně chaotickém stavu. Podrobná studie morfologických znaků a aplikace molekulárních metod vyústila v novou klasifikaci tribu. Zkoumáním muzejních sbírek a typových exemplářů bylo vytvořeno více než 140 nových druhových kombinací. Ve třetí studii jsem analyzoval, zda by Malacký průliv mohl fungovat jako účinná bariéra pro nedokonale létající brouky rodu Cautires. Identifikoval jsem jen omezený počet kolonizací mezi oběma stranami průlivu až po Pliocén a následnou intenzivní výměnu fauny v Pleistocénu. Poslední tři kratší publikace byly zaměřeny především na taxonomii a klasifikaci. Synonymizoval jsem rod Dumbrellia s rodem Plateros a popsal nové druhy Calochromus kelantanensis a C. harauensis. Dále jsem popsal podrod Escalonius v rodu Calochromus a identifikoval samce druhu Micronychus pardus pomocí molekulárních markerů. Obě výše zmíněné studie by nemohly být provedeny pouze na základě morfologické analýzy.

Abstract:

Net-winged beetles are the diverse family of beetles (Coleoptera), which contains more than 4300 formally described species worldwide. The greatest diversity is documented in tropical rain forests and it very probably represents just a fraction of a real species count. The current problem with habitat losses and deforestation could lead to the destruction of ecosystems and to massive species extinction. This is especially true for net-winged beetles with high dependence on specific conditions and limited ability to colonize new habitats. Therefore, it is important to locate places with high species diversity and protect them. Moreover, if we understand the processes leading to the origins of diversity of net-winged beetles, it would be much easier to extrapolate them to other insect groups. This Ph.D. thesis merges six studies focused on the Müllerian mimicry, sexual dimorphism, molecular phylogeny, taxonomy, and phylogeography of net-winged beetles. The topic of the first study was the genus Dilophotes, which represents a remarkable example of the Müllerian mimicry. Using molecular phylogeny, I was able to identify closely related species, which could not be recognized solely on external morphological characters. Furthermore, I was able to assign conspecific males and females and identify their sexual dimorphism. Further, I focused on the reconstruction of the ancestral dispersal routes from continental Asia to the Malay Peninsula and Great Sundas during the last 70 Mya. The second study is dealing with the tribe Calochromini, which was taxonomically neglected for several decades. The detailed study of morphological characters, the examination of the museum collection, and application of molecular methods resulted in a new classification of the tribe and more than 140 new species combinations. In the third study, I analysed if the Malacca Strait could be an effective barrier for the poorly flying net-winged beetle genus Cautires. I identified only a limited number of colonization events between both landmasses up to the Pliocene and intensive exchanges of faunas since the Pleistocene. Last three short papers were focused on taxonomy and classification. I synonymized Dumbrellia with Plateros and newly described Calochromus kelantanensis and C. harauensis. Further, I described subgenus Escalonius in the genus Calochromus and identified the male of Micronychus pardus using molecular markers. Some relationships could not have been recovered without molecular data.
