Natural resources and their impact on Angolan civil war

Abstract:

Práce zkoumá vliv nerostného bohatství, ropy a diamantů, na vznik, průběh, ukončení a délku občanské války v Angole. Pro lepší vystihnutí tohoto vlivu je válka rozdělena na dvě fáze: První fáze popisuje situaci za Studené války, kdy mocnosti jako USA a SSSR svým diktátem utvářely mezinárodní prostředí. Ve druhé fázi potom dochází k posílení role nerostných surovin. Hlavním zjištěním je, že ropa ani diamanty nezapříčinily propuknutí války, ale měly vliv na charakter konfliktu a hlavně ve druhé fázi přispěly k vleklosti již už tak dlouhé občanské války.

Abstract:

This work examines the impact of mineral resources, of oil and diamonds, on the onset, course, termination and duration of the civil war in Angola. The civil war is divided into two phases to better determine the influence. The first phase describes the conditions during the Cold War, where the superpowers, the USA and the USSR, dictated and shaped the international relations of the world. The second phase deals with a strengthening role of both resources. The main findings are following: Neither oil nor diamonds caused the outbreak of the war. However, both had an impact on the nature of the warfare and especially in the second stage of the conflict, contributed to a significant prolongation of the war.
