Guglielma of Milano and her followers

Abstract:

Hlavním předmětem této práce je analýza inkvizičního procesu, který se odehrál roku 1300 v Miláně a který zachycuje činnost malé skupiny odkazující se k místní světici Vilemíně, pohřbené v cisterciáckém opatství Chiaravalle. Tato skupina podporovala učení o vtělení Ducha svatého do Vilemíny, o jejím zmrtvýchvstání, spáse Židů a Saracénů a o ustanovení nového zástupce Ducha svatého na Apoštolském stolci. V důsledku toho byla prohlášená za kacířskou. Cílem této práce není pouhý popis dané skupiny jako jednolitého celku s jasně vymezeným učením tak, jak jej podává inkviziční záznam a pozdější historiografie, ale snaha zachytit vznik a především vývoj dané skupiny, popř. doktrinální spory mezi ustavujícími členy. Zvláštní pozornost je také věnována samotné Vilemíně a otázce její působnosti při genezi hnutí. První část je zaměřená na celkový úvod do problému, kritické zhodnocení inkvizičního pramene a na dosavadní interpretace Vilemíniných stoupenců, a to jak ze strany inkvizice, tak ze strany historie. Druhá část poté obsahuje vlastní výzkum a dílčí závěry práce. V první řadě je to otázka Vilemínina českého původu, který zůstává neprokázaný, stejně jako její aktivní role při vzniku hnutí. Z výpovědí také vyplývá nejednotnost v doktrinálních otázkách týkajících se očekávání zmrtvýchvstání Vilemíny, nastolení ženské hierarchie, rostoucího významu zástupce Ducha svatého na zemi, tj. Manfrédy da Pirovano, a lze také pozorovat rozpory v přístupu jednotlivých stoupenců ke kultu, kdy dochází k odlišnostem mezi „staršími“ a „mladšími“ členy skupiny. V závěru je řešena otázka spásy celého hnutí, jakým způsobem byla argumentována spása skrze ženu a jak tomu byl přizpůsoben Vilemínin obraz.

Abstract:

The main issue of this thesis is an analysis of inquisitorial records of 1300 in Milano, where is recorded an activity of a small group concerning local woman-saint Guglielma, buried in the Cistercian abbey of Chiaravalle. They believed that Guglielma was an incarnation of the Holy Ghost in the form of a woman, after her resurrection and ascension she would convert the Jews and Saracens and establish new Holy Ghost´s vicar on the Apostolic See. For this doctrine the group of Guglielma´s followers were sentenced as heretical. The aim of this thesis is not only the description of these heretics as homogeneous group with clear-defined conception of doctrine, but also the reconstruction of the foundation and formation of this group, with regard to doctrinal disputes among the followers. There is special attention devoted to Guglielma and her role in the genesis of this movement. The first part is focused on the introduction of Guglielma´s followers, also on the critical consideration of inquisitorial source and on the existing interpretations of this group, both by the inquisitors and the historians. In the second part there is the main research included partial results of thesis. Firstly it is the question of Guglielma´s Czech origin, which is still unproved, as well as her active role in the foundation of this movement. Secondly it is the question of movement´s progress. In the inquisitorial testimonies there are differences in doctrinal conceptions of Guglielma´s resurrection, new female hierarchy, increasing status of the new earthly vicar of the Holy Ghost, i.e. Maifreda da Pirovano, and also it is possible to observe some practical discrepancy among the followers, especially between the „senior“ and „junior“ members of the group. In the conclusion there is solved the question of followers´salvation, especially the arguments of the salvation through the woman and how was Guglielma´s image modified by these arguments.
