Pri voľbe z možností X a Y je možné zvýšiť podiel tých, ktorí si zvolia X uvedením tretej možnosti Z, ktorá je podobná, ale objektívne horšia ako X. Tento jav je známy ako efekt asymetrickej dominancie. Podobným je efekt takmer dominovaných alternatív, ktorý však vzniká vďaka iným kognitívnym procesom.
