Eugenics in the United States: Regional Differences

Abstract:

O eugenice se nezvykne mluvit v souvislosti s historií Spojených států. Proto se tahle práce věnuje právě eugenice. Eugenika byla ve Spojených státech rozšířena v první polovině 20. staletí. Avšak, nerozvíjela se stejnou rychlostí ve všech částech Spojených států. Tahle práce se soustředí na rozdíly mezi severem a jihem Spojených států, které by mohli souviset s otroctvím. Přezkoumaly se nedobrovolná sterilizace, zavíraní lidí do ústavů pro duševně nemocné, zákony omezující manželství jistých skupin lidí, eutanázie a soutěže o nejlepší dítě nebo o nejzdravější rodinu, a pak byli porovnané mezi severem a jihem. Sever se zdá být tím eugeničtějším regionem Spojených států, protože se tam eugenické metody objevovaly dřív a byly více rozšířené. Příčiny tohohle mohou být to, že sever měl vyvinutější vzdělávaní, méně vlivu od církvi a více migrantů. Tyhle příčiny a fakt, že sever je tím eugeničtějším regionem poukazují na to, že neexistuje signifikantní propojení mezi rasizmem vůči Afroameričanům a eugenikou.

Abstract:

Eugenics is often overlooked in the history of the United States. That is why this work is concerned with the topic of eugenics. The movement enjoyed popularity in the first half of the 20th century. However, eugenic ideas developed at different speeds in different parts of the United States. The focus of this work is the north and the south of the US and the differences between them which might have arisen due to slavery. Involuntary sterilization, institutionalization, marriage restriction laws, euthanasia, and better baby and fitter family contests are examined in order to compare eugenic practices in the north and in the south. The north appears to be the more eugenic region since eugenic trends usually manifested sooner and they were employed to a greater extent. The reasons for this include a more developed education system, less influence from the Church and higher migration rates in the north. By identifying these reasons and concluding that north was more invested in eugenics, a significant connection between eugenics and racism against African Americans is disproved.
