Construction of Gender Identity among K-pop Fans in the Czech Republic

Abstract:

K-pop je jihokorejský hudební žánr, který se vyvinul v průběhu 20. století jako součást korejské kultury. Moderní K-pop, jehož počátek se zasazuje do 90. let 20. století, si získal kromě asijských zemí i celou řadu fanoušků z Evropy a Spojených států. Jeho oblíbenost v posledních letech stoupá mimo jiné díky tomu, že produkuje specifické fanouškovství, ve kterém dává aktérům prostor pro redefinování maskulinity, avšak zároveň samotný pohled fanoušků zůstává ne zcela prozkoumán. Hlavním cílem bakalářské práce je popsat motivaci a způsob, jakým se utváří genderová identita mezi fanoušky K-popu v České republice. Práce se detailně zaměří na fenomén zvaný soft maskulinita, který vychází z moderní jihokorejské kultury, a pokusí se zmapovat jeho percepci skrze pohled daných fanoušků. Mimo jiné zde ještě budou prozkoumány přidružené jevy jako hallyu nebo zatím akademicky neukotvený pojem gender envy. Hlavním přínosem bakalářské práce bude popsání soft maskulinity v tuzemském kontextu, čímž se nabídne další pohled na zmíněnou problematiku. Kvalitativní výzkum bude postaven na rešerši dostupné literatury, zúčastněném pozorování v prostorech mezi fanoušky a následných polostrukturovaných rozhovorech, které budou doplněné o rozhovory nestrukturované a neformální. Bakalářská práce se též bude inspirovat podobně zaměřenými výzkumy provedenými zvláště v jihovýchodní Asii a Spojených státech, kde byl fenomén soft maskulinity zatím prozkoumán nejvíce.

Abstract:

K-pop is a South Korean music genre that developed during the 20th century as a part of Korean culture. Modern K-pop, which originated in the 1990s, has gained a large number of fans from Europe and the United States in addition to Asian countries. Its popularity has been increasing in recent years, partly because it fosters a specific fandom culture that provides its actors with space to redefine masculinity, yet the perspective of the fans themselves remains somewhat unexplored. The main aim of the bachelor thesis is to describe the motivation and process of gender identity formation among K-pop fans in the Czech Republic. The thesis will focus extensively on the phenomenon called "soft masculinity," which stems from modern South Korean culture, and will attempt to map its perception through the eyes of these fans. Additionally, associated phenomena such as hallyu or the academically unestablished concept of gender envy will also be explored. The main contribution of the bachelor thesis will be the description of soft masculinity in the domestic context, offering another perspective on the mentioned issue. Qualitative research will be based on a review of available literature, participant observation in spaces among fans, and subsequent semi-structured interviews supplemented by informal, unstructured conversations. The bachelor thesis will also draw inspiration from similarly focused studies conducted, especially in Southeast Asia and the United States, where the phenomenon of soft masculinity has been most extensively explored.
