Freeganism as a form of direct action in the era of consumerism

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se věnuje fenoménu freeganství jako anti-konzumní alternativě v éře konzumu. Teoretická část představuje povahu současné společnosti a kultury, jejímž dominantním rysem je konzum. Na začátku se zabývá spotřebním chováním, jeho následky v kontextu globalizovaného světa a ideologie ekonomického růstu. Dále se práce konkrétněji soustředí na anti-konzumní alternativy s důrazem na subkulturu freeganství, na kterou nahlíží jako na formu přímé akce v konzumním kapitalismu. Praktická část slučující poznatky z kvalitativního výzkumu a sekundárních zdrojů se snaží odhalit politické a kontrakulturní strategie v pozadí každodenního života a veřejného aktivismu ideologických freeganů. Otevírá diskusi, jakými cestami se snaží přiblížit k ?ideální? společnosti, jakými prostředky šíří osvětu a analyzuje propojení ostravských dumpster diverů s freeganismem.

Abstract:

This thesis explores the phenomenon of freeganism as an anti-consumerist alternative in the era of consumerism. The theoretical part discusses the nature of contemporary society and culture whose dominant feature is consumption. The work deals with consumer behavior and its consequences in the context of the globalized world and the ideology of economic growth. Further it introduces an anti-consumerist alternatives with an emphasis on freeganism subculture which is considered as a direct action in the consumerist capitalism. The practical part connects findings from qualitative research and secondary sources trying to uncover the political and countercultural strategies in the background of everyday life and public activism of ideological freegans. It opens the debate, in which ways they try to approach the "ideal" society and by which means they spread awareness and also analyzes the linkage between dumpster divers in Ostrava and freeganism.
