A comparison of the most important changes in the Czech and Dutch drug laws in the first decennium of the 21st century

Abstract:

De auteur houdt zich bezig met de problematiek van de drugswetgeving in Tsjechië en Nederland. De lezer wordt eerst bekend met de geschiedenis van het Nederlandse gedoogbeleid. Dan volgt een vergelijking van de recente ontwikkelingen in de twee landen. Aan het begin van de onderzochte periode voerde Tsjechië nogal repressief beleid, terwijl Nederland de hoofdrol speelde als het meest prominente drugsland in Europa. De laatste jaren zien we echter dat het Nederlandse gedoogbeleid steeds meer aangescherpt wordt, terwijl Tsjechië juist voor meer liberale wetgeving kiest. Uit het onderzoek blijkt dat er enkele overeenkomsten zijn tussen de twee drugswetgevingen maar vooralsnog ook aanzienlijke verschillen.

Abstract:

The author writes about the drug laws in Czech Republic and the Netherlands. The reader will be confronted with the history of the Dutch policy of tolerance of selling soft drugs. Then the recent developments of the two laws are compared. At the beginning of the research period Czech Republic had a repressive policy. The Netherlands were in the same period known as the main actors in the European drug market. However, in the last years we can observe a flow of new laws that are toughening the Dutch policy. In the Czech Republic on the other hand the law has changed to be more liberal. The research shows that there are some similarities but also still big differences between the two laws.
