Ra Group and the surrealistic references within a czech imaginative art

Abstract:

Skupina mladých umělců označovaná jako „mladší surrealisté“ nebo „druhá generace českého surrealismu“ stála na přelomu třicátých a čtyřicátých let před nelehkým úkolem převzít otěže a posunout dál odkaz této „poslední velké avantgardy“. V té době již celé hnutí, v zahraničí i na domácí půdě, jevilo známky téměř uzavřeného vývoje. V jeho jádru se zrodily reakční tendence rozšiřující prostor uměleckých aktivit o sféru politicko sociální. Stalo se tak v momentě, kdy zpočátku převratný objev psychického automatismu ustrnul na mrtvém bodě a začal být vnímán spíše jako zábavná psychologická hra na cvičení fantazie.Výtvarně i literárně prezentované asociace nabývaly nápadně podobného charakteru. Získaly punc pouhých prefabrikovaných symbolů, prezentovaných v různém kontextu. Nejenom z tohoto důvodu se účastníci nově vznikajícího seskupení v rámci mladé generace bránili absolutnímu ztotožnění svojí tvorby s „neosurrealismem“ či dokonce předválečným surrealismem. V konfrontaci s programovou náplní Skupiny 42 , Mladé fronty, nebo Sedmi v říjnu však nelze Skupině Ra odejmout „nadrealistické“ stigma v rámci vymezení její charakteristiky a začlenění do kontextu vývojové linie českého výtvarného umění. V jádru svého počátku nese raná tvorba některých členů (Václava Tikala, Bohdana Laciny a Václava Zykmunda) znaky syntetické nápodoby „manýristické“ odnože výtvarného surrealismu, založené na realisticky pojaté interpretaci nadreálných představ (tzv.„veristické metody“ proslavené především Salvátorem Dalím ). Nicméně na rozdíl od agresivního erotismu a ostré satyry bořící konvence tradičního „posvátna“, předkládá celá tato generace dílo více kontemplativní a existencionální povahy. Příčina tkví nepochybně v reakci na krizové období druhé světové války, ale také v odkazu poetismu, českého lyrického směru zrozeného uvnitř hnutí „Devětsil“. V opozici k Bretonově definici surrealismu z prvního manifestu lpěla Skupina Ra na udržení určité formální kontroly a uměřenosti. Její členové, zejména ve svém raném období, pracovali komplexně s využitím asociativních představ, avšak s neskrývanou snahou o racionální korekci (což je patrné zejména v poezii a lyrických textech). Ve svém hledání se nakonec kolektivně přiklonili k „revoluční“, radikálně levicově zaměřené odnoži surrealismu, která hledala širší obzory a nové výrazové možnosti v obratu k logice, intelektuální složce a dialektickému myšlení. Aspekt „revolučnosti“ v umělecké tvorbě byl zmiňován prakticky v každém skupinovém prohlášení a fakticky tvořil jeden z nejzákladnějších teoretických bodů jejího programu. I přes komplikované interní vazby, způsobené častými kolizemi několika vůdčích individualit, se v konečné fázi osm umělců rozhodlo setrvat ve skupině a prezentovat svoji tvorbu pod kolektivní záštitou. Je tedy pravděpodobné, že navzdory složitým relacím spatřovali svou účast ve skupině jako pozitivní podnět i pro vlastní individuální růst. Skupina Ra se přirozeně oprostila od dobových normativních regulí o programové profilaci výtvarné či literární skupiny. Její pevná pozice v současných kulturně historických retrospektivách potvrzuje míru přínosu pro české výtvarné umění.

Abstract:

A group of young artists known as „young Surrealists“ or „the second generation of the Czech Surrealism“ was at the turn of 1930s and 1940s facing a difficult task: to take the reins and further the legacy of this „last great avant garde“. At that time it was already the whole movement, abroad as well as at home, that showed signs of an almost completed development. From its center originated reactionary tendencies that, although different from the first conceptual base, they derived from the base and broadened the question of artistic activities by including the social-political domain. This happened at a point where the originally revolutionary discovery of psychic automatism came to a deadlock and began to be perceived as more of a diverting psychological game to train imagination. Associations represented by visual and literary art were beginning to strikingly resemble prefabricated symbols presented in different contexts. Nevertheless, this wasn t the only reason why the participants of the newly emerging group within the young generation opposed a total identification of their works with Neosurrealism, not to speak about pre-war Surrealism, even though the question of their creative roots and their dependence on them was intentionally left open for a long time. However, when confronted with the program of Skupina 42, Mladá fronta or Sedm v říjnu, the Ra Group cannot be deprived of the surrealistic hallmark within the framework of its definition and integration into the context of the evolutionary lineage of the Czech visual art. In the heart of the early works of some members (Václav Tikala, Bohdan Lacina, Václav Zykmund) can be found marks of synthetic imitation of the manneristic branch of Surrealism which is based on a realistically conceived interpretation of surrealistic projections (so called „veristic method“, famous especially thanks to Salvator Dalí). Nevertheless, in opposition to the agressive erotism and relentless satire that destroys the conventions of traditional „sacredness“, this generation s work is of a more contemplative and existential nature, influenced not only by the tragedy of the World War II but also by reverberations of poetism wafting from the legacy of the Devětsil Movement. Opposed to Breton s definition of Surrealism as presented in the first 1924 manifesto, Ra Group insisted upon the preservation of a certain formal control and moderation. Especially in the early period of their work, its memebers worked comprehensively and used associations. However, this was done with an open attempt at a rational correction, which is conspicuous notably in the poetry and lyrical texts. In their search as a unit, they finally leant to the „revolutionary“ and radical socialistic branch of Surrealism that searched for broadened horizons and novel possibilities of expression in logics, intellectual sector, and dialectical thinking. The revolutionary aspect of the art would be mentioned almost constantly in a number of proclamations, and in fact, it formed the essential point on which the group was based. The relations inside the group were complicated and several leading individuals were in conflict. However, eight artists in the end decided to stay in the group and present their works under the patronage of the group. It is probable that in spite of the difficulties involved, these individuals saw in their participation in the group an impetus for individual growth. Ra Group simply freed itself of the normative rules limiting the programs of groups of painters and writers of the period, and its stable position in the current retrospective surveys confirms its contribution to the Czech visual art.
