Self-organization of highly grafted single-component nanoparticles: Insight from mesoscale modelling

Abstract:

Pomocí mesoskopických simulací jsme zkoumali samo-organizaci zlaté sférické nanočástice roubované řetízky polystyrenu, rozpuštěné v tetrahydrofuranu. V závislosti na parametrech délce roubovaných řetízků a objemovém zlomku nanočástic jsme sledovali, zda v systému dochází k tvorbě uspořádání a jak je rovnoměrné, do jaké struktury se nanočástice uspořádávají a jakým způsobem vyplňují polymery prostor mezi jádry nanočástic. Přítomnost uspořádání jsme určovali pomocí radiální distribuční funkce středu hmotnosti nanočástic a dále ho popisovali pomocí strukturního faktoru. Dále jsme každé nanočástici přidělili Voroného buňku a z distribuce jejich objemů jsme určovali rovnoměrnost jednotlivých uspořádání. Vzniklou strukturu jsme určili pomocí klastrové analýzy. Nakonec jsme prostřednictvím poloměru gyrace, orientace řetízků vůči povrchu jádra nanočástice a jejich radiální distribuční funkce popsali způsob, jakým řetízky vyplňují prostor mezi jádry nanočástic.

Abstract:

Using mesoscopic simulations we researched self-organization of gold spherical nanomarticles grafted with polystyrene chains, dissolved in tetrahydrofuran. By varying length of polystyrene chains and volume fraction of nanoparticles, we examined whether nanoparticles form ordered structure and extent of its uniformity, type of this structure and manned in which polystyrene chains fill the space in between the nanoparticles' cores. We determined the presence of ordered structure using radial distribution function of nanoparitcle's center of mass and we described the present structure using structure factor. Then, a Voronoi cell was assigned to each nanoparticle and by examining the distribution of their volumes, we determined the uniformity of such a structure. To determine the type of emerged structure we used cluster analysis. Finally, we used radius of gyration, orientation of polymer chains relative to the surface of nanoparticle's core and radial distribution function of polymer chains, to explore the manner in which polymers fill the inter-core space.
