Soothing the Emotional Brain: Modulation of Neural Activity by Tactile Social Support

Abstract:

Úvod: Vystavenie negatívnym emočným stimulom aktivuje špecifické neurálne okruhy v mozgu. Sociálna opora blízkou osobou môže regulovať emočné odpovede a poskytovať komfort avšak neurálne koreláty sociálnej opory sú vo veľkej miere neznáme. V súbore predkladaných štúdií sme skúmali neurálne odpovede na rôzne negatívne emočné stimuly, s dôrazom na neurofyziologické koreláty modulačného účinku taktílnej sociálnej opory. Metódy: Pomocou metódy funkčnej magnetickej rezonancie sme najprv u zdravých dobrovoľníkov a pacientov so sociálnou úzkostnou poruchou skúmali neurálnu reaktivitu a funkčnú konektivitu pri vystavení negatívnym sociálnym a nesociálnym emočným obrazovým stimulom. V ďalšej štúdii na zdravých dobrovoľníkoch sme následne skúmali neurálne siete aktivované prostredníctvom (a) fotografie zosnulého blízkeho človeka a (b) smútkovej mentálnej imaginácie týkajúcej sa tej istej zosnulej osoby. V poslednej štúdii sme skúmali elektrofyziologické odpovede na tématicky všeobecnejšiu averzívnu imagináciu. Na skúmanie modulačného efektu taktilnej sociálnej opory sme študovali neurofyziologické odpovede v rámci troch podmienok – a) držanie za ruku partnerom, b) držanie za ruku cudzincom a c) podmienka bez akejkoľvek sociálnej opory. Výsledky: U pacientov so sociálnou úzkostnou poruchou sme v porovnaní so zdravými dobrovoľníkmi, zistili zvýšenú reaktivitu amygdaly na sociálne vs. nesociálne emočné stimuly. V následujúcich štúdiách na zdravých dobrovoľníkoch, viedla sociálno-emocionálna stimulácia k aktivácii viacerých oblastí mozgu, vrátane predného cingula, prednej insuly a dorzálneho striata. Taktílna sociálna opora poskytnutá partnerom znížila neurálnu reaktivitu v týchto oblastiach. Okrem toho sa pri stimulácii formou fotografie zosnulého blízkeho človeka, znížila aj funkčná konektivita medzi prednou insulou a predným cingulom pri opore poskytnutej partnerom oproti tej, poskytnutej cudzincom. Táto konektivita ďalej negatívne korelovala s mierou bezpečnej väzby (attachment) vo vzťahu k partnerovi. V EEG štúdii bola zistená znížená elektrofyziologická aktivita, konkrétne v theta frekvenčnom pásme, pri poskytnutí opory partnerom. Táto aktivita zároveň korelovala s meraniami kožnej vodivosti a mierou bezpečnej väzby vo vzťahu k partnerovi.. Záver: V prezentovanom súbore prác sme demonštrovali špecifickú reaktivitu mozgu na rôzne negatívne emočné stimuly a priniesli sme dôkazy o neurofyziologických korelátoch taktílnej sociálnej opory. Naše výstupy zdôrazňujú dôležitosť blízkych ľudí pri utlmovaní neurálnej aktivity súvisiacej s negatívnymi emóciami a pri utišovaní subjektívnej úzkosti.

Abstract:

Background: Exposure to negative emotional stimuli activates specific neural networks in the brain. Social support, such as by one’s significant other, can regulate emotional responses and provide comfort, but the neural correlates of social support are mostly unknown. In a set of presented studies, we investigated the neural responses to various emotional stimuli with the emphasis on neurophysiological correlates of the modulatory effect of tactile social support. Methods: The functional magnetic resonance imaging was first used to investigate neural reactivity and connectivity to negative social and non-social emotional pictorial stimuli in healthy participants and patients with social anxiety disorder. In another group of healthy volunteers, we further examined the neural networks activated by (a) the social picture of a deceased close person and (b) the sad mental imagery related to the same person. In the last study, we explored the electrophysiological responses to a more general aversive imagery. To reveal the modulatory effect of the tactile social support, the brain responses were studied under three conditions – (a) holding hands by one’s romantic partner, (b) holding hands by a stranger and (c) without any social support. Results: We found increased amygdala reactivity to social vs. non-social emotional stimuli in anxiety patients as compared to healthy controls. The social-emotional stimulation in healthy participants in subsequent studies activated several brain areas, including the anterior cingulate cortex, the anterior insula and the dorsal striatum. Tactile social support by romantic partner reduced reactivity in these areas. Additionally, the functional connectivity between anterior insula and anterior cingulate cortex during personal pictorial stimulation was also reduced when comparing support from the partner and a stranger, that was further negatively correlated with the attachment security towards the partner. In the EEG study, only theta power was observed to be reduced when receiving support from the partner, that further correlated with skin conductance measurement and attachment style. Conclusion: Here, we demonstrated a specific brain reactivity to various negative emotional stimuli and brought the evidence about neuroimaging and electrophysiological correlates of tactile social support, highlighting the importance of close others in soothing the emotion-related neural activity and subjective distress.
