Commented Translation of a passage of technical text

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with the analysis and translation of a technical text describing and promoting the production of technical textiles. The translation process is divided into three fundamental stages. These are the analysis of the text, the reformulation phase and the evaluation of the translation. The introduction is dedicated to language analysis of the text, its functions and factors influencing the language structure and choice. One chapter is devoted to translation tools, with a focus on CAT tools. The freeware program OmegaT was used for translation. Its basic functions are demonstrated by using samples of the selected text. The main part of the thesis deals with the terminology. All problematic terms from textile production and processing, terms used in marketing and French terms, which have in Czech only partial or no suitable equivalent, are listed in this chapter. Emphasis was also put on the appropriate selection of adjectives forming collocations with technical terms, which were analysed with tools available on the portal of the Czech National Corpus. A glossary of technical textiles terms is an important contribution to this work. The final part describes the procedures for the translation to be properly checked, including its stylistic and formal aspects.

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá analýzou a překladem technického textu, který je zaměřen na oblast výroby technických textilií. Překladatelská práce je rozdělena do tří základních etap. Jedná se o analýzu a rozbor textu, fázi reformulace a zhodnocení vyhotoveného překladu. Úvodní část se věnuje jazykovému rozboru textu, jeho funkcím a činitelům, které mají vliv na strukturu a výběr jazyka. Jedna kapitola je věnována překladatelským nástrojům se zaměřením na CAT nástroje. K překladu byl využit volně dostupný program OmegaT. Jeho základní funkce jsou demonstrovány na ukázkách z překladu vybraného textu. Stěžejní část práce se zabývá terminologickou stránkou překladu. V této kapitole jsou uvedeny především problematické termíny z oblasti výroby a zpracování textilu, dále termíny používané v marketingu a francouzské termíny, které disponují v češtině jen částečným, popřípadě žádným vhodným ekvivalentem. Důraz byl rovněž kladen na vhodný výběr kolokviálních přídavných jmen, k jejichž rozboru byly mimo jiné využity nástroje dostupné na portále Českého národního korpusu. Součástí práce je rovněž glosář termínů z oblasti technických textilií. V závěrečné části jsou uvedeny postupy, jejichž pomocí byl překlad řádně zkontrolován včetně stylistické a formální stránky.
