The Causes of Enron Bancruptcy with the Effects on Audit

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zaměřuje na americkou společnost Enron, ve své době jednu z vedoucích světových společností podnikajících v oblasti dodávek elektřiny a zemního plynu. Koncem roku 2001 se našla významná pochybení ve vedení účetnictví této společnosti, která vedla až k jejímu bankrotu. Práce popisuje vývoj společnosti od jejího samotného počátku až do konce její existence a vliv auditorské společnosti Arthur Andersen v celé kauze. Seznamuje čtenáře s problematikou vykazování derivátů a podvody, které lze prostřednictvím nich spáchat. Závěrem jsou zmíněny následky bankrotu a dopady na auditorskou praxi včetně doporučení zlepšení současných zákonů a standardů.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis focuses on American company Enron, at times, one of the world’s leading companies involved in natural gas and electricity supply. At the end of the 2001 there were significant errors found in the accounting books of the company, which has led to its bankruptcy. The thesis explores the history of Enron from its very beginning to the end of its existence, and examines the effect of the auditing firm Arthur Andersen on the Enron collapse. It introduces the issue of derivatives reporting including accounting frauds that can be committed through derivatives. Finally, there are aftermath and reforms mentioned in the theses with the bankruptcy impact on auditing and recommendations for improving existing legislation and regulations.
