The effects of the style of leadership on job satisfaction and work performance in multicultural teams in project management

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis was to discover the effects of leadership style on job satisfaction and job performance and to explore the role of cultural diversity or size of a team in these relationships. The study included 115 employees of IT companies in field of project management. Results showed that members of the team with relationship-oriented leadership style experienced higher job satisfaction than members of the team with task-oriented leadership style. No relationship was established between cultural diversity and job performance or job satisfaction in teams with task-oriented leadership style. On the other hand, increase of cultural diversity in teams with relationship-oriented leadership positively associated with job performance, and negatively associated with job satisfaction. Team’s size yielded opposite results for teams with different leadership styles. In the teams with task-oriented leadership style greater number of members in the team was positively related with job satisfaction, while in teams with in relationship-oriented leadership style team’s size this relationship was negative. The obtained results provide important theoretical and practical implications for managing multicultural teams.
