The Magic of the Real (Technicist Architecture and the Response to International Style. Notes on Phenomenological Architecture)

Abstract:

Práce je koncipována jako určitý oblouk či řez skrze dějiny architektury 20. století. Soustředí se na popis architektonických dějin tzv. fenomenologické architektury a argumentuje, že tento přístup k architektuře je součástí modernistického myšlení. V architektuře se projevuje jako vlastní reakce na internacionální sloh a technicistní architekturu. Narace je vedena skrze analýzu a ekphrasis vybraných staveb od Alvara Aalta, Carla Scarpy, Petera Zumthora a Stevena Holla. Jejich stavby jsou pro vykreslení odlišnosti přístupu srovnávány se stavbami technicistní linie architektury. Na základě předložené analýzy navrhuje jednoduché pojmové rozlišení koncepčního přístupu na konkrétní a abstraktní architekturu. Koncepční rozlišení lze však rozpoznat také při důsledné analýze daných staveb. Pozornost je věnována právě tomu. Zdůrazněna je práce s materiálem, do kterého je započítáno i světlo, ale také přístup k tradici a místu. Fenomenologická je vhodný termín, protože se obrací k těmto základním kvalitám architektury. Fenomenologie architektury není brána jako obecná metoda interpretace architektury, jak ji představuje Juhani Pallasmaa a Robert McCarter, nýbrž ukazuje, že je možné hovořit o fenomenologické architektuře jako specifickému přístupu k architektuře ve 20. století. Není to však práce o koncepčním zázemí, primárně se soustředí na samotné stavby. Ukazuje však dále, že je možné pro hlubší pochopení takového typu využít pojmů fenomenologických filozofů: především pojem přirozeného světa, který reflektuje rozdvojení současného světa na prožívaný aktuální svět a svět vytvořený moderní přírodovědou.

Abstract:

The main objective of this thesis is to reveal historical background of phenomenological architecture. It reflects the rise in popularity of architects such as Peter Zumthor, Steven Holl, RCR and many others of this kind and explains the phenomenon as a part of dialectical nature of modernism. The thesis is focused on analysis and ekphrasis of buildings by Alvar Aalto, Carlo Scarpa, Peter Zumthor and Steven Holl and suggests that their pieces of architecture can be described as specific architecture - the opposite being abstract architecture by Mies van der Rohe and Le Corbusier and others. These terms refer to conceptual background which can be traced clearly in buildings as a lot of comparisons in the thesis show. Key for understanding specific architecture can be seen in phenomenology in philosophy, in particular the term Lebenswelt (developed by Jan Patočka following Edmund Husserl´s thoughts) is very important because it captures the divided vision of the modern world: on one hand there is the world we live in naturally and understand spontaneously and can act in this world and on the other hand there is the scientific description of the world which is idealistic and objective. Such a distinction reflects the differences between what is called specific and abstract architecture.
