Travesties and transvestites in literary work of Michel Tremblay (PhD Thesis Proposal)

Abstract:

Literary world of Michel Tremblay (1942), a Quebecois writer and playwright, is a literary world par excellence - its characters create multilayered masks in order to hide their own suffering, their Me and perception, or to prove their worth throughout the social encounters of their everyday life. The latter seems to be desperately empty and constantly being perturbed by either internal or external restrictions. These restrictions are of a mental, temporal or spatial kind, as well as the restrictions of one's own existence, which are further aggravated by the look of another: the same tasks repeat daily in a vicious cycle, thus making existence in Tremblay's Plateau Mont-Royal - main “stage” of his works, resemble a fatalistic condemnation of a certain life tragedy. To escape the omnipresent restrictions, protagonists create various travesties (travestissements) of reality, including masks of their real Me. Dissertation Travesties and transvestites in the literary work of Michel Tremblay studies the structure and structuration of Tremblayan disguises, their psychological and literary configuration through two views - firstly, through the thematic view in specific manifestations, where our text studies theatrical decoration, illusions and social motivation that finalise the disguise presented to another - the spectator of this (life) drama. We focus mainly on the transvestites, because they illustrate the most the structuration of a disguise and its vast referentiality as well as the recurrent duality of dreams and reality, interiority and its possible exteriorization: using the costume, the transvestites try to create their ideal Me, which is further realized in an ontological ritual. The latter is represented by a cabaret show. This show then works as a living transcription of reality, manipulating the vision of the spectator, who is needed to confirm the realized fantasy. The other view focuses on the structure: the author uses rich textual and theatrical techniques in order to illustrate the existential depth and strengthen the tragedy of his work. These techniques involve modernizing the scheme and elements of Greek tragedy, catharsis of inner suffering in rewritten (travestied) catholic liturgy, employing musical structures and motives, or using complete travesty, which in a parodic deviation opens the scene of metatextual reflection and allows the creation of new disguises. These (inter)textual and (inter)cultural references and plurality, or even mise en abyme of the disguise, Tremblay's theatre, often mis en abyme itself, becomes author's personal ritual, where one can put away their own masks, and experience momentary theatrical catharsis in living one's own Me.

Literární svět Michela Tremblaye (1942), québeckého spisovatele a dramatika, je divadelním světem par excellence: jeho postavy si tvoří mnohovrstevnaté masky proto, aby zamaskovaly vlastní utrpení, své Já a prožívání, anebo proto, aby obstály na sociální scéně svého každodenního života. Ten se zdá být zoufale prázdný, neustále omezovaný vnějšími či vnitřními restrikcemi. A to mentálními, časovými i prostorovými, jakož i restrikcemi vlastního bytí, které umocňuje pohled druhého: jako v bludném kruhu se v každodenním životě opakují stále stejně úkoly, existence v Tremblayově Plateau Mont-Royal, hlavní „scéně“ jeho děl, se tak podobá fatalistickému odsudku jisté životní tragédie. Aby protagonisté unikli všudypřítomných restrikcím, tvoří si různé převleky reality (travestissements), včetně převleků skutečného já. Strukturu a strukturaci Tremblayovských převleků, jejich psychologickou a literární konfiguraci zkoumá disertační práce Travesti(e)s et travestissements dans l’œuvre littéraire de Michel Tremblay ve dvou rovinách: nejdříve na úrovni tematické, tedy v konkrétních projevech, kdy si náš text všímá teatrálních ozdob, (teatrálních) iluzí a sociální motivace, které převlek utvářejí v jeho definitivní podobě prezentované druhému, diváku (životního) dramatu. Hlavní pozornost věnujeme transvestitům, neboť nejnázorněji ukazují strukturaci převleku a jeho rozsáhlou referenčnost, ale i rekurentní dualitu snu a reality, interiority a její možné exteriorizace: transvestité se snaží prostřednictvím kostýmu vytvořit ideál vlastního já, který realizují v rámci ontologického rituálu. Tím se pro ně stává kabaretní představení. Toto představení pak funguje jako prožívaná transkripce reality, během níž se manipuluje s vizí druhého, diváka, nutného pro konfirmaci realizovaného fantasmatu. Druhou sledovanou úrovní je úroveň strukturní: autor používá k vylíčení existenční hloubky a umocnění tragičnosti svých děl bohatých textových a divadelních prostředků. Jde například o aktualizaci schémat a prvků řecké tragédie, o katarzi trpícího nitra v přepisu (travestie) katolické liturgie, o využití hudebních struktur a motivů, anebo o úplnou travestii, která v parodické odchylce od původního textu otvírá scénu metatextové reflexe a pro tvoření nových převleků. Skrze tyto (inter)textové a (inter)kulturní reference a mnohost, či přímo mise en abyme, převleku, Tremblayovo divadelní představení, rovněž často mis en abyme, se u autora stává osobitým rituálem, kdy je možné na chvíli odložit všechny masky a prožít krátkodobou teatrální katarzi v prožívání vlastního já.
