Olfactory communication among two equid species

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá čichovou komunikaci u dvou vybraných druhů koňovitých, a to zebrami Grévyho - Equus grevyi a osli asijskými - Equus hemionus onager. Každý živočišný druh má jistou formu komunikace a u koňovitých hraje právě čichová komunikace důležitou roli. Cíle své práce jsem řešila pomocí testování několika hypotéz, které jsem rozdělila do tří částí. První část by mohla vysvětlit, kteří jedinci a za jakých podmínek přeznačují moč či trus jiných jedinců v rámci stáda. Druhá část hypotéz by mohla vysvětlit, zda se značkování liší mezi dvěma pozorovanými druhy. Třetí část by mohla objasnit, kterým činnostem věnují osli a zebry nejvíce, či nejméně času v průběhu dne. Diplomová práce byla realizována v zoologické zahradě Ostrava. Pozorovala jsem dvě stáda o celkovém počtu 15 zvířat, během tří sezon. Celkem jsem odpozorovala 300 hodin, během 50 dní. Výsledky mé diplomové práce potvrdily hypotézu o zvýšené aktivitě a bdělosti u hřebce, hypotézu o upevňování sociálních vazeb mezi klisnami, hypotézu o přeznačování klisen hříbaty a také antipredační hypotézu u hříbat. Na druhou stranu hypotéza o vymezení teritoria hřebcem, hypotéza o pohlavní kompetici klisen a hypotéza o přeznačování hříběte po jiných hříbatech nebyla potvrzena. U hypotézy o skupinové soudržnosti, kdy značkování pravděpodobně vytváří familiární pach stáda, který může sloužit k udržování jeho soudržnosti, byla jedna predikce potvrzena, avšak druhá predikce potvrzena nebyla. Dále jsem zjistila, že laktující klisny zebry Grévyho trávily žraním větší podíl času, než klisny nelaktující, zatímco u klisen osla asijského tomu bylo přesně naopak. Tyto výsledky u zeber Grévyho potvrdily hypotézu o zvýšeném příjmu potravy u laktujících klisen, kdy laktující klisny mají na rozdíl od nelaktujících klisen větší nároky na přísun potravy, a proto by laktující klisny měly žraním trávit více času, zatímco u oslů asijských tuto hypotézu nepotvrdily. Z testovaných hypotéz byly potvrzeny čtyři a dvě částečně. Nepotvrdily se tři hypotézy. Vzhledem k malému počtu studií, které se danému tématu věnují, představuje tato práce důležitý posun v našich znalostech o chování poměrně málo zkoumaných druhů. Do budoucna by bylo vhodné provést srovnání s volně žijícími jedinci, či podrobnější mezidruhové srovnání.

Abstract:

This theses deals with an olfactory communication in two selected equine species - the first is a Grevy's zebra called (Equus grevyi), and the second is an wild ass (Equus heminous onager). Each animal species has a specific form of communication, and in equines, it is an olfactory communication that plays an important role. The goals of my thesis were reached by testing several hypotheses which were divided into three parts. The first part would explain under what conditions specific individuals overmarks the urine or the feces of other animals within their herd. The second part of the hypotheses would explain whether marking of the two observed species differs. The third part would clarify what activities donkeys and zebras spend the most and the least of their time on. The diploma thesis was conducted in the zoological garden in Ostrava. Two herds of a total number of 15 animals were observed over three seasons. It was recorded 300 hours overall in 50 days. The results of my thesis confirmed a hypothesis of increased activity and alertness observed in stallions. Also, there were other confirmed hypotheses: a hypothesis of consolidation of social bonds among mares, a hypothesis of foals over marking mares, a hypothesis of foals over marking by other foals, and antipredatory hypothesis occurring in foals. On the other hand, a hypothesis of stallion demacarting a territory and of sexual competititon among mares have not been confirmed. In a hypothesis of group cohesion, describing that tagging probably creates a familiar odor of the cattle which possibly functions as to maintain its cohesiveness, there was one presumption confirmed. However, the second presumption was not confirmed. Furthermore, I found that the lactating mares of Grevy zebra had spent more time on feeding themselves than the non-lactating mares, while it was entirely opposite in the mares of Asian donkey. In the Grevy's zebras, these results confirmed a hypothesis of increased food consumption of lactating mares, proving that the lactating mares require a greater intake of food in contrast with the non-lactating mares. Therefore, the lactating mares should spend more time on feeding. Simultaneously, this hypothesis was not confirmed in the Asian wild ass. Three hypotheses have not been confirmed. In consideration of a small number of studies focusing on this subject, this thesis represents a significant advancement in our knowledge of a behavior of the species that are relatively rarely studied. In the future, it would be appropriate to conduct a comparison with the other equid species.
