The suicide motif in works by Stefan Zweig and Arthur Schnitzler

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá motivem sebevraždy v dílech Stefana Zweiga a Arthura Schnitzlera. Záměrem bylo popsat, jakým způsobem sebevražda ovlivnila jejich život a projevila se v jejich tvorbě. K dosažení tohoto záměru byla použita srovnávací metoda. První a druhá část práce pojednává o důležitých momentech v jejich životě a atmosféře Vídně fin-de-siècle stejně jako o habsburském mýtu. Třetí a čtvrtá část práce vysvětluje, jakým způsobem sebevražda ovlivnila jejich vlastní život a jak se motiv sebevraždy a smrti formoval v jejich tvorbě. Poslední část práce srovnává vždy jednu novelu od Stefana Zweiga a Arthura Schnitzlera, a slouží k ilustrování konkrétní podoby sebevražedných motivů.

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis deals with suicide motif in works by Stefan Zweig and Arthur Schnitzler. Goal of this thesis is to describe how suicide affected their lives and how suicide motif manifests in their literary works. To achieve this goal the comparative method was used. First and second part of thesis deals with important moments in their lives and atmosphere of fin-de-siècle Vienna as well as Habsburg myth. Third and fourth chapter explains how suicide influenced their lives and how death and suicide motives form in their works. Last part of thesis compares one novella by Stefan Zweig and one novella by Arthur Schnitzler to illustrate concrete forms of suicide motif.
