Postnatal Development of the Hand Bones: A Longitudinal Study

Abstract:

Cílem této diplomové práce bylo prostudovat růst kostí typu dlouhého lidské ruky z longitudinální Vratislavské růstové studie (Polsko, 1961-1972), srovnat růst jednotlivých kostí mezi sebou, zjistit mezipohlavní rozdíly v růstu kostí ruky a porovnat zjištěné údaje s dalšími dostupnými populacemi pomocí tradičních morfometrických metod. Studovaný materiál představovalo 985 rentgenových snímků levých rukou 103 chlapců a 47 dívek ve věkových kategoriích 9 až 19 let. Snímky byly naskenovány do digitální podoby a po úpravě kontrastu na nich byly měřeny délky 19 kostí ruky (5 kostí záprstních, 5 proximálních, 4 střední a 5 distálních článků prstů) a další vybrané rozměry ruky. Analýza byla založena na longitudinálních změnách středních hodnot naměřených rozměrů. Průměrná délka kostí ruky chlapců i dívek se s věkem zvyšovala a růstové vzorce kostí se mezi jednotlivými kostmi příliš nelišily, u většiny kostí byl maximální procentuální přírůstek ve 13 letech pro chlapce a 11 letech u dívek. Výjimku tvořily distální články, kde byl růst urychlen dříve u dívek a radio-ulnárně odstupňovaný u chlapců. Průměrné hodnoty délky kostí ruky chlapců a dívek se od sebe vzdalovaly už od 12 nebo 13 let. Metakarpofalangeální profil tohoto vzorku byl celkově podobnější vzorku ze severního Walesu (2001) než americkému vzorku (1972), který je používán jako osteologický standard. V šířkových rozměrech ruky měli chlapci vyšší hodnoty než dívky, a to už od dětství, výjimkou je pouze distální šířka ruky bez prvního metakarpu. V délce ruky chlapci přerostli dívky ve 13 letech a poté se od sebe dále vzdalovali. Poměr délky 2. a 4. prstu ruky byl nižší u chlapců než u dívek a celkově podobný hodnotám zjištěným ve Vratislavské růstové studii dvojčat. Do budoucna by bylo vhodné zpracovat longitudinálním způsobem individuální růstové křivky a statisticky hodnotit individuální růstové parametry jedinců této studie.

Abstract:

The purpose of this thesis was to study the growth of long type human hand bones from longitudinal Wroclaw Growth Study (Poland, 1961-1972), to compare the growth of individual bones amid themselves, to find out sexual dimorphism in the hand bones growth and compare ascertained data to other available populations with the help of traditional morphometric methods. The studied material consisted of 985 x-ray photographs of 103 boys´ left hands and 47 girls´ hands in the age from 9 to 19 years. Photographs were scanned into a digital form and, after a contrast enhancement, 19 hand bones (5 metacarpals, 5 proximal phalanges, 4 medial phalanges and 5 distal phalanges) and other selected hand dimensions were measured in them. The analysis was based on longitudinal changes of a mean value of measured dimensions. An average length of boys´ and girls´ hands increased with age and, in most of the bones, growth patterns of bones did not differ between individual bones, a maximal increase (in %) was recorded at the age of 13 years with boys and at the age of 11 years with girls. Distal phalanges represented the exception, where growth was accelerated earlier in girls and differentiated in the radio-ulnar direction in boys. The average values of boys´ and girls´ hand bones became more different starting at 12 or 13 years of age. The metacarpophalangeal pattern profile of this sample was generally more similar to a pattern from the North Wales (2001) than to an American pattern (1972), which is used as an osteological standard. In the width proportions of the hand, boys´ values were higher than those of girls, and this was since childhood, the only exception was the distal width of the hand without the first metacarpal. As to the hand length, boys overgrew girls at the age of 13 and after that the difference grew further. The 2nd to 4th digit ratio was lower in boys than girls and overall similar to the values ascertained in Wroclaw Longitudinal Study of Twins. For the future it might be useful to execute individual growth curves by longitudinal method and statistically evaluate individual growth parameters of this study participants.
