US policy and Iraqi nuclear weapons

Abstract:

The conflict between the USA and Iraq broke out in the early 1990s and culminated in the invasion of Iraq and deposition of dictator Saddam Hussein in 2003. Development and threat of proliferation of weapons of mass destruction played an important role in the conflict and in the end served as a rationale for military action. This bachelor's thesis analyses the conflict from the point of view of proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and deterrence theory. It focuses primarily of the role of deterrence in the American policy towards Iraq and its nuclear ambitions. Theoretical part of the paper describes basic principles and options for applying deterrence in international relations and the non-proliferation policy of the USA. Practical part examines the use of deterrence in the American policy towards Iraq between the years 1990 and 2003. On the basis of these facts, a conclusion is given that analyses the use and success of deterrence in this conflict.

Abstract:

Konflikt medzi USA a Irakom vypukol začiatkom 90. rokov minulého storočia a vyvrcholil inváziou Iraku a zosadením diktátora Saddáma Husajna v roku 2003. Podstatnú úlohu v konflikte hral vývoj a hrozba proliferácie irackých zbraní hromadného ničenia, ktorá nakoniec slúžila ako zdôvodnenie vojenského zásahu. Táto bakalárska práca analyzuje konflikt z hľadiska proliferácie zbraní hromadného ničenia a teórie odstrašovania. Zameriava sa prevažne na úlohu odstrašovania v politike USA voči Iraku a jeho jadrovým ambíciám. Teoretická časť práce popisuje základné princípy a možnosti uplatnenia odstrašovania v medzinárodných vzťahoch a protiproliferačnú politiku USA. Praktická časť skúma použitie odstrašovania v politike USA proti Iraku v rokoch 1990 až 2003. Na základe týchto faktov sú v závere práce analyzované použitie a úspešnosť odstrašovania v tomto konflikte.
