Xenophobia and Cultural Anxieties in Late Victorian Gothic Novels

Abstract:

Podstatou práce je analýza paradoxu strachu v troch neskoro viktoriánskych gotických románoch. Práca prostredníctvom biokultúrnej kritiky vykonáva identifikáciu a rozbor úzkostí prítomných vo viktoriánskej spoločnosti, ktoré sú reflektované v románoch Dracula, Trilby a Pomsta posvätného chrobáka. Interdisciplinárny prístup pomáha vysvetliť zvláštny fenomén románov, ktorým sú negatívne, no zároveň atraktívne reakcie strachu a znechutenia, vyvolávané zlovestnou postavou cudzinca s nadprirodzenými schopnosťami. Práca sa pozerá na strach v dobovom kontexte náhlych epistemických zmien a zaoberá sa jeho úlohou z hľadiska modernej psychológie a evolučnej biológie. V snahe uchopiť podstatu xenofóbie a paradoxu strachu sa osobitný dôraz kladie na sociálnu povahu ľudí a komplexnosť našich vyvinutých obranných systémov. Hlavnú časť práce tvorí teoretický rámec, ktorý predstavuje kontextovú a vedeckú podporu výrokov použitých v troch prípadových štúdiách.

Abstract:

The thesis explores the paradox of fear in three late Victorian Gothic novels. Biocultural criticism is employed in order to identify and analyse anxieties of the Victorian society reflected in the novels Dracula, Trilby, and The Beetle. The interdisciplinary approach helps to explain novels’ peculiar phenomenon—negative but simultaneously attractive reactions of fear and disgust elicited by a figure of an evil foreigner with mesmeric powers. The thesis examines the role of fear from the point of view of modern psychology and evolutionary biology while discussing it in the context of the period’s sudden epistemic shifts. Particular emphasis is put on the social nature of humans and the complexity of our evolved defence systems to establish the nature of fear paradox and xenophobia. The thesis begins with a theoretical framework that provides the contextual and scientific underpinning of subsequent case studies.
