The perception of syncretism and the role of shaman in El Salvador

Abstract:

The thesis provides an insight into the question of relationship between Christianity, syncretism and shamanism in El Salvador based on the interrogation of 25 informants. In the course of centuries from the times when Christopher Columbus first reached the shores of America – which was one of the events that “terminated” the Middle Ages – this continent has changed beyond recognition. In a relatively short span of time the (from the Eurocentric point of view) savage tribes living in harmony with nature were forced to become “civilized” and familiar with the Holy Scriptures. The change led to an adaptation of the Christian teaching to native beliefs, which were connected with the worship of spirits, of number of gods and of Mother Earth. Because of this phenomenon – the religious syncretism – cases such as identification of a saint with an Indian god are to be found. It is known that Latin American states are mainly Christian, but on the basis of the above-mentioned facts, a question may be asked, whether this religion has the same nature in El Salvador as in Europe. After further study of the problem we maintain that the Christianity in Latin America was subjected to the inculturation - i. e. it was adapted for indigenous people without suppressing their identity, but at the same time without deformation of the Christian teaching.

Cílem mojí práce je na základě názorů 25 respondentů nahlédnout do problematiky křesťanství, synkretismu a šamanismu v Salvadoru. V průběhu staletí, která uplynula od doby, kdy Kryštof Kolumbus dorazil k břehům Ameriky, jedné z událostí „ukončující“ éru středověku, se tento světadíl změnil téměř k nepoznání. V relativně krátkém časovém úseku byly, z evropocentrického pohledu, divoké kmeny žijící v souladu s přírodou, nuceny stát se „civilizovanými“ znající Písmo svaté. Tato změna zapříčinila to, že si původní obyvatelstvo přizpůsobilo křesťanskou nauku své víře, spojenou především s uctíváním duchů, množství bohů a Matky Země. Díky tomuto jevu, náboženskému synkretismu, se můžeme setkat například se ztotožněním světce s indiánským bohem. Je známo, že státy Latinské Ameriky jsou převážně křesťanské, ale na základě řečeného může vyvstat otázka, zda má toto náboženství stejný charakter v Salvadoru jako v Evropě. Po studiu problematiky můžeme říci, že křesťanství v Latinské Americe bylo podrobeno inkulturaci, což znamená, že bylo uzpůsobeno původnímu obyvatelstvu takovým způsobem, aby nebyla potlačována jejich identita a zároveň nedocházelo k deformaci křesťanské nauky.
