Mid-point in the Likert scale: Effect on psychometric characteristics of the scale and response processes

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá rolí středního bodu v Likertově škále. Je realizována prostřednictvím mezisubjektového výzkumného designu s experimentálně manipulovanými formáty od-povědní stupnice. Stupnice, administrovaná respondentům, tak obsahovala buďto 7 bodů, 6 bodů, a nebo 6 bodů spolu s možností „nevím / nelze odpovědět“ mimo rozsah stupnice. Psychometrické charakteristiky škály se napříč těmito formáty nijak výrazně nemění. Analýza invariance navíc ukazuje, že vztah škály k měřenému latentnímu rysu se s ohledem na odpovědní formát neliší a škála tak měří stále stejně dobře. Zkoumány byly rovněž vztahy mezi tendencí k volbě středního bodu a vybranými psychologickými konstrukty (satisficing, maximizing, potřeba a schopnost dosažení kognitivního uzavření). Žádná souvislost ovšem nebyla nalezena. V závěru studie byla realizovaná kvalitativní analýza různých interpretací středního bodu respondenty. Mezi nejčastější významy, připisované střednímu bodu, patřily například: „nemohl/a jsem se rozhodnout / nejistota“, „záleží na kontextu“, „nemám (vyhraněný) názor“, „neutrální“, „ani souhlasím, ani nesouhlasím“ či „nevím“.

Abstract:

This work examines the role of mid-point in the Likert scale. It is conducted as by a between-subjects design with experimentally manipulated response formats of the scale. The scales administered to respondents included either 7 points, 6 points, or 6 points with an additional "don't know / non applicable" option outside the scale range. Psychometric charac-teristics of the scale did not significantly change across these formats. Furthermore, an invar-iance analysis shows that the relationship of the scale to the measured latent trait does not differ with respect to the response format, indicating that the scale measures consistently well. Relationships between the tendency to choose the mid-point and selected psychological constructs (satisficing, maximizing, the need and ability to achieve cognitive closure) were also examined, but no correlations were found. The study concludes with a qualitative analy-sis of respondents' various interpretations of the mid-point. The most common meanings attributed to the mid-point included: "cannot decide / uncertain," "depends on the context," "no (definite) opinion," "neutral," "neither agree nor disagree," or "don't know."
