Abstract:

Vector Addition Systems with States (VASS) jsou důležitým modelem pro souběžné procesy, paralelní programy a parametrizované systémy. Mohou být také použity jako model programů za účelem získání odhadů na času a/nebo prostor, které tyto programy mohou vyžadovat. V této dizertační práci se zaměřujeme na získání odhadů na dobu terminace VASS a jejich rozšíření, zejména stochastické rozšíření a hry na VASS, přičemž klademe důraz na lineární dobu terminace. Uvažujeme obě krajní varianty nedeterminismu, andělskou a démonickou. Andělský (démonický) nedeterminismus je vyřešen co největším snížením (zvýšením) doby terminace. Výsledky naší práce jsou následující. Pro démonické VASS představíme polynomiální algoritmus, který rozhoduje, zda je terminace lineární. Ukážeme, že pokud doba terminace není lineární, je alespoň kvadratická. Také ukážeme, že každý VASS, který má lineárně ohraničené čítače buď neterminuje, nebo má polynomiální dobu terminace, kde nejnižší stupeň polynomu ohraničující dobu terminace je nejvýše roven dimenzi daného VASS. Dále představíme polynomiální algoritmus, který přesně určí asymptotickou dobu terminace takového VASS. Ukážeme také, že pokud čítače nejsou lineárně ohraničené, pak určení asymptotické doby terminace VASS je NP-těžký problém. V práci také představíme algoritmus, který určí dobu terminace VASS s vyšší dobou terminace, jako například exponenciální či věž exponentů. Pro andělské VASS ukážeme, že doba terminace je buď lineární, nebo je VASS neterminující, přitom tuto skutečnost lze ověřit v polynomiálním čase. Pro hry na VASS ukážeme, že problém lineární terminace (a některé další) je NP-úplný a andělský nedeterminismus může být vyřešen zavázáním se ke strategii, která zafixuje z každého stavu (tohoto hráče) jeden daný přechod. Na druhou stranu také ukážeme, že problém kvadratické terminace je PSPACE-těžký a strategie pro andělský nedeterminismus je složitější. Také poskytneme charakterizaci lineární terminace pro stochastické rozšíření VASS (VASS MDP), kterou lze ověřit v polynomiálním čase. Tato charakterizace je úplná pro andělskou terminaci a také pro každý démonický VASS MDP, kde dekompozice na maximální koncové komponenty tvoří orientovaný acyklický graf.

Abstract:

Vector Addition Systems with States (VASS) are a fundamental model for concurrent processes, parallel programs, and parametrised systems. They can be also used as models of programs for obtaining bounds on the time and/or space needed by the program. In this thesis, we focus on determining the bounds on the termination time of VASS and their extensions, namely VASS MDPs and VASS games, with an emphasis on the linear termination. We consider both angelic and demonic nondeterminism. Here, the angelic (demonic) nondeterminism is resolved by lowering (increasing) the termination time as much as possible. Our contributions are as follows. For demonic VASS, we give a polynomial time algorithm for deciding whether it has linear termination complexity. We show that if the termination complexity is not linear then it is at least quadratic. We show that every VASS with linearly bounded counters is either non-terminating or it has a polynomial termination time where the degree of the polynomial is at most equal to the dimension of the VASS. We present a polynomial time algorithm that determines the exact asymptotic complexity of such VASS. We also show that if the counters are not linearly bounded then establishing the asymptotic termination complexity of a VASS (with polynomial termination complexity) is NP-hard. We also present an algorithm that provides the termination complexity of VASS with higher termination times such as exponential or tower of exponents. For angelic VASS, the termination time is either linear or the VASS is non-terminating. This can be checked in polynomial time. For VASS games, we show that the linear termination problem (as well as some other problems) is NP-complete and the angelic nondeterminism can be resolved by committing to a memoryless, counterless strategy (i.e., we just fix transitions for this player). On the other hand, we show that the quadratic termination problem is PSPACE-hard and the strategy to resolve the angelic nondeterminism is more complex. We also provide a characterisation of the linear termination for every VASS MDPs that can be checked in polynomial time. This characterisation is complete for angelic termination and works for every demonic VASS MDP such that its decomposition into maximum end components forms a directed acyclic graph.
