Interpretation of historical moments and presentation of a collective trauma in museums

Abstract:

Srovnávací studie se zabývá různými způsoby znázorňování kulturního traumatu v muzeích. Představeny jsou dva případy: Židovské muzeum v Berlíně a Muzeum Varšavského povstání ve Varšavě. Zároveň se studie věnuje vztahu těchto institucí k širšímu diskursu. Ve Foucaultově perspektivě jsou muzea představena jako heterotopie, které mají potenciál vytvářet alternativní čtení panujícího diskursu traumat. Pro srovnání dvou jedinečných historických událostí je užito epistemologického konceptu kulturního traumatu navrženého Alexanderem. To se zaměřuje nikoliv na události samotné, ale na to, jakých forem nabývají skrze následnou kulturní praxi. Druhá rovina analýzy se zaměřuje již na vlastní budovy muzea. Teoretickým rámce pro tuto část práce představuje současná kulturní sociologie, která obrací pozornost k tomu, jaké významy jsou přiřazovány materiálním objektů. V samotné analýze muzeí je důraz kladen především na sémiotickou analýzu a ikonologii. Práce vychází z názoru, že historická muzea jsou instituce, která se významnou měrou podílí na vyjednávání o vlastní historie a politice paměti. Proto je hlavním cílem zjistit, jakým způsobem muzea historii znázorňují. Zda svým fungováním dominantní společenský diskurs reprodukují, nebo zda ho dekonstruují.

Abstract:

This comparative study examines different modes of representation of cultural traumas in museums. This paper includes two examples: the Jewish Museum in Berlin and the Warsaw Rising Museum. Subsequently, the study examines the relationship between the two museums next to a broader discourse on trauma. For this purpose, both museums are introduced from the perspective of Michel Foucault who conceives museums as heterotopy, possessing the ability to challenge structures of power. With the view to analyzing the cultural practice following two traumatic historical events the approach engages an epistemological tool of cultural trauma designed by Alexander, which allows for shifting the focus from the event itself to the cultural practice and construction of meanings. The second part of the analysis is dedicated to describing and interpreting the distinct aesthetic qualities of each of the mentioned museums. This part of the paper is based on the theoretical framework set by recent approaches of cultural sociology that concentrate on attributing social meaning to material objects. This method corresponds with the analysis of semiotics and iconology. According to this paper’s conviction museums are historical institutions that significantly contribute to ongoing discussions and negotiations regarding the topics of memory and history. To explore whether the museums reproduce or deconstruct the main discourse concerning trauma is what this paper aimed to achieve.
