A high-resolution stratigraphy of the Devonian-Carboniferous boundary interval

Abstract:

Hraniční interval mezi devonem a karbonem (D/K) byl spojen s hangenberskou krizí, která se globálně projevila hromadným vymíráním a výraznými změnami v marinní sedimentaci, spojenými s pádem mořské hladiny. To činí stávající definici hranice D/K a stratotypu ve francouzském La Serre problematickou, neboť je založena na prvním výskytu pelagického konodonta Siphonodella sulcata, který nastupuje až při prohloubení prostředí. S celou řadou problémů je navíc spojena jak definice indexového druhu, tak současného stratotypu. Z těchto důvodů vznikla snaha o redefinici hranice D/K. Předložená disertační práce přispívá výsledky multidisciplinárního výzkumu do diskuse k této redefinici. V práci jsou kombinovány stratigrafické konvenční metody (konodontová biostratigrafie a karbonátová sedimentologie) s metodami petrofyzikálními (terénní gamaspektrometrie, magnetická susceptibilita, spektrometrie difuzního odraženého světla) a geochemickými (geochemie stabilních izotopů uhlíku, prvková geochemie). Studováno bylo celkem 14 profilů a to v Moravském krasu (Česká republika; Lesní lom, Mokrá, Křtiny), Rýnském břidličném pohoří (Německo; Oese, Oberrödinghausen, Drewer), namursko-dinantské pánvi (Belgie, Francie; Gendron-Celles, Rivage, Les Ardennes), Karnských Alpách (Rakousko; Grüne Schneid, Kronhofgraben), Montagne Noire (Francie; La Serre, Puech de la Suque) a Pyrenejích (Francie; Saubette), které z paleogeografického hlediska náležely laurusijským a peri-gondwanským teránům. Profily zahrnují převážně vápencové sledy z pelagického až neritického depozičního prostředí. Kombinace použitých metod dovolila analyzovat stratigrafický záznam ve smyslu fluktuací mořské hladiny a dalších paleoenvironmentálních změn a využít je k regionálním a interregionálním korelacím. Jako proxy přítomnosti siliciklastického materiálu bylo užito parametru Computed Gamma-ray (CGR), Th/K (měřeno gamaspektrometricky), Al, Zr/Al a K/Al (měřeno energiově difúzní rentgenovou fluorescencí - ED-XRF). Paleoredoxní ukazatele zahrnují U/Th (gamaspektrometrie), Mn, Fe/S (ED-XRF) a proxy paleoproduktivity Cu, Zn, Ni, Pb (ED-XRF). U/Th dokládá relativní pokles prokysličení na většině studovaných pelagických profilů před hangenberskou krizí v konodontové zóně praesulcata. V polohách odpovídajících eventu černých hangenberských břidlic růst U/Th kulminuje. Hodnoty jsou však indikativní pouze pro hypoxické prostředí (profily Drewer, Kronhofgraben, Lesní lom a Mokrá), zatímco na profilech (Křtiny, Oese, Oberrödinghausen, Grüne Schneid, Puech de la Suque, La Serre, Saubette) jsou hodnoty U/Th typické pro prokysličené prostředí. Rychlost sedimentace klastického materiálu hangenberských břidlic vykazuje nárůst oproti podložním vápencům. Tato zjištění narušují běžně přijímanou interpretaci eventu černých hangenberských břidlic jako typicky anoxického eventu, který byl spojen se stratigrafickou kondenzací. Relativně zvýšené koncentrace Cu, Zn, Ni a Pb, stejně jako pozitivní anomálie δ13Ccarb (nově doložená také z Moravského krasu) však ukazují na vyšší míru paleoproduktivity a pohřbívání Corg. Následující event hangenberských pískovců je spojen s hiátem (v namursko-dinantské pánvi), který je korelovatelný s vložkami siliciklastik ve sledech pelagických karbonátů (Rýnské břidličné pohoří, Moravský kras, Montagne Noire). Zvýšení přínosu klastického materiálu při progradaci se projevilo nárůstem některých siliciklastických proxy, jako je CGR, obsahy Al nebo Zr/Al, které byly zjištěny jak na profilech s uvedenými siliciklastiky, tak na pelagických profilech bez přerušené karbonátové sedimentace (Moravský kras, Karnské Alpy). akt poklesu hladiny (FSST) s povrchem nucené regrese na bázi (bsfr), případně ve vyšší části nízkého stavu hladiny (LST), které byly vyvolány glacioeustatickým pádem hladiny oceánu. V rampovém prostředí namursko-dinantské pánve je nižší část spodního tournai charakteristická progradující sekvencí sedimentů nízkého stavu hladiny (LST), ve kterých byla zjištěna pozitivní anomálie δ13Ccarb, stejně jako ve spodním tournai v Moravském krasu. Jejich ekvivalenci však nelze kvůli špatné biostratigrafické kontrole průkazně doložit. Hodnoty δ13Ccarb však v namursko-dinantské pánvi rostou se zvyšující se proximalitou facií, poukazující na možný lokální význam této anomálie. Na závěr spodního tournai došlo k transgresi, která vyvrcholila na bázi středního tournai kahlenberským eventem („Lower Alum Shale“ Event). Ten se projevuje nástupem černých břidlic na mnoha studovaných profilech, které mají U/Th indikativní pro hypoxické až anoxické podmínky a nárůstem koncentrací Cu, Zn, Ni, a Pb. Studium konodontové biostratigrafie intervalu D/K v Moravském krasu potvrdilo výskyt morfotypu druhu Si. sulcata již pod hangenberskou krizí. Toto zjištění je ve shodě s novějšími údaji z Frankenwaldu nebo Maroka. Nově byl od báze konodontové zóny hassi zjištěn v paleozoiku Moravského krasu konodont Si. belkai, který je indexovým druhem východoevropské a uralské zóny belkai. To umožňuje korelaci bází zmíněných zón. Studovány byly také ichtyolity a kosterní elementy eleutherozoidních echinodermát. Největší korelační potenciál má event hangenberských pískovců, který je petrofyzikálně a geochemicky detekovatelný jak v neritických, tak pelagických profilech a mohl by být použit jako doplňující kritérium pro novou definici hranice D/K.

Abstract:

The Devonian-Carboniferous (D/C) boundary interval was connected with the Hangenberg Crisis manifested by the mass extinction and overturns in marine sedimentation, accompanied by sea-level fall. This makes the current D/C boundary definition problematic because it is based on the first appearance of the pelagic conodont Siphonodella sulcata whose occurrence was dependent on the deepening of an environment. In addition, many problems are connected with the definition of the index species and the current GSSP in La Serre, France. A redefinition of the D/C boundary is, therefore, necessary and one of the aims of this PhD thesis is to contribute to the discussion leading to the redefinition. This thesis combines conventional methods (conodont biostratigraphy and carbonate sedimentology) with petrophysical (gamma-ray spectrometry, magnetic susceptibility, diffuse spectral reflectance) and geochemical tools (stable carbon isotopes geochemistry, element geochemistry). In total, 14 sections have been studied in the Moravian Karst (Czech Republic; Lesní lom, Mokrá and Křtiny quarries), Rhenish Slate Mountains (Germany; Oese, Oberrödinghausen, Drewer), Namur-Dinant Basin (Belgium, France; Gendron-Celles, Rivage, Les Ardennes), Carnic Alps (Austria; Grüne Schneid, Kronhofgraben), Montagne Noire (France; La Serre, Puech de la Suque) and Pyrenees (France; Saubette), constituting the Laurussian and peri-Gondwanan terranes. The sections comprise predominantly carbonate successions of the pelagic to neritic facies realms. The combination of the methods allowed to interpret the stratigraphic record in terms of palaeoenvironmental changes, sea-level fluctuations, and propose regional / interregional correlations. Computed gamma ray (CGR), Th/K ratio (gamma-ray spectrometry), concentrations of Al, Zr/Al and K/Al ratios (ED-XRF) are used as detrital proxies. Paleoredox markers comprise U/Th ratio (gamma-ray spectrometry), concentrations of Mn and Fe/S ratio (ED-XRF) and palaeoproductivity proxies include concentrations of Cu, Zn, Ni, and Pb (ED-XRF). A relative decrease in sea bottom oxygenation prior the Hangenberg Crisis is interpreted on the base of rising U/Th ratios at all studied sections (the praesulcata Zone). The U/Th ratios culminate in the Hangenberg Black Shale Event interval. Nevertheless, their maximum values (Drewer, Kronhofgraben, Lesní lom and Mokrá sections) indicate only hypoxic conditions. Otherwise, the U/Th ratios show only values typical for oxic conditions in the other sections studied (Křtiny, Oese, Oberrödinghausen, Grüne Schneid, Puech de la Suque, La Serre, Saubette). Sedimentation rates of the siliciclastic material in the Hangenberg shales are higher as compared to the underlying. These findings are in contradiction to the generally accepted interpretation of the Hangenberg Black Shale Event as stratigraphically condensed anoxic deposit. However, relatively elevated concentrations of Cu, Zn, Ni and Pb as well as a positive δ13Ccarb anomaly (recently evidenced also from the Moravian Karst) indicate higher palaeoproductivity and organic carbon burial rates. The following Hangenberg Sandstone Event is characterized by a prominent siliciclastic incursion within the pelagic carbonate successions (Rhenish Slate Mountains, Moravian Karst, Montagne Noire), which correlates with stratigraphic gaps in the carbonate ramp settings (Namur-Dinant Basin). The progradation of siliciclastics was accompanied by an increase in such siliciclastic proxies as CGR, Al and Zr/Al, which were observed both in the sections with siliciclastic intercalations and in the section with uninterrupted carbonate deposition (Moravian Karst, Carnic Alps). The Hangenberg Sandstone Event is interpreted as a forced regressive systems tract (FSST, with a basal surface of forced regression at its base) passing upward into lowstand systems tract (LST), caused by glacioeustatic sea-level fall. were still deposited during sea-level lowstand or slowly rising relative sea level in the ramp environment of the Namur-Dinant Basin. δ13Ccarb anomaly has been documented from these lowstand deposits, as well as from the lower Tournaisian of the Moravian Karst. However, a correlation of these anomalies is doubtful due to the biostratigraphic difficulties. δ13Ccarb fluctuations are facies dependent in the Namur-Dinant Basin, which can indicate local significance of the anomaly. A prominent transgression started in the upper part of the lower Tournaisian and culminated at the base of mid-Tournaisian with the Kahlenberg Event (“Lower Alum Shale” Event). Black shales of the Kahlenberg Event interval in several studied sections are characteristic by high U/Th values indicative for dysoxic to anoxic conditions and increased Cu, Zn, Ni, and Pb concentrations. The conodont biostratigraphy of the D/C boundary intervals from the Moravian Karst confirmed that the Si. sulcata morphotype has its first appearance still below the Hangenberg Crisis, which is consistent with the recent biostratigraphic data from Frankenwald and Morocco. The conodont Si. belkai, which is an index species for the eastern European and Uralian belkai Zone, was documented for the first time from the Moravian Karst. It is therefore possible to correlate bases of both mentioned zones. Furthermore, ichthyoliths and skeletal elements of eleutherozoid echinoderms have been studied. The Hangenberg Sandstone Event, which is well traceable both in neritic and pelagic sections, is an interval with the highest correlative potential, which can be used as auxiliary criterion for the new D/C boundary definition.
