Kitsch as an immanent part of junk fiction?

Abstract:

Kýčovitost bývá s literárním brakem často spojována. Tato práce si pokládá otázku, zda je kýč z hlediska vybraných teorií imanentní součástí brakové literatury. Práce postupuje převážně analyticky. V první části se zaměřuje na teorii brakové literatury. Brak je nejprve vymezen ve vztahu k oblasti populární literatury. Poté práce zkoumá počátky brakové literatury a následně určuje její charakteristické rysy. V druhé části práce jsou podrobeny analýze tři teorie kýče. Konkrétně se jedná o teorie Matei Calinesca, Milana Kundery a Tomáše Kulky. V poslední části práce je zkoumána aplikovatelnost těchto teorií na brakovou literaturu. Analyzována je analogie počátků fenoménu kýče a braku, ale také jejich sociologické aspekty. Vybrané teorie kýče jsou dále vztaženy k obecným rysům literárního braku jako jsou formální charakteristiky a schematičnost, což je následně doloženo konkrétními příklady.

Abstract:

Junk fiction is often associated with kitschiness. This thesis inquires whether kitsch is, from the viewpoints of selected theories, an immanent part of junk fiction. The thesis proceeds mainly analytically. In the first section, the thesis focuses on the theory of junk literature. Junk fiction is first delineated in relation to the area of popular literature. Thereafter, the thesis explores the origins of junk fiction and subsequently determinates its characteristic traits. In the second section of the thesis, three theories of kitsch are analysed. Namely the theories of Matei Calinescu, Milan Kundera and Tomáš Kulka are discussed. The last section of the thesis examines the applicability of these theories to junk fiction. The analogy of the origins of both the phenomena is analysed, as are their sociological aspects. The selected theories are then applied to general characteristics of junk fiction which include formal characteristics and formula, all of which is substantiated with specific examples.
