English Animal Idioms

Abstract:

The thesis is a contextual study of English animal idioms. One of the aims of this paper is to map the basic theoretical background concerning idioms in general. Primary focus is maintained on the semantic field of animals, including birds, insects and other associated concepts of the animal world. The animal world is expected to be a rich area providing a number of idioms since animals resemble people in many aspects such as behaviour, instincts and social hierarchy. Moreover, a small database of English animal idioms is analysed in terms of kinds of animals, figures of speech and lexical and syntactic variations occurring with these idioms. As a contextual study, this paper incorporates journalistic texts containing animal idioms. These texts serve as a small corpus illustrating the actual use of idioms. This thesis may also be considered a handbook of English animal idioms.

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce je kontextuální studií anglických idiomů s názvy zvířat. Jedním z cílů je zmapovat základní teoretické přístupy k idiomatice. Hlavním záměrem práce je prozkoumat sémantické pole zvířat a dalších logicky asociovaných konceptů světa zvířat. Tento svět je předpokládaným bohatým zdrojem poskytující značný počet idiomatických výrazů. Zvířata a lidé se totiž podobají v mnoha aspektech, jako je chování, instinkty nebo sociální hierarchie. Dalším cílem je také vytvořit databázi anglických idiomů s názvy zvířat a tyto výrazy dál analyzovat. Jako kontextuální studie, tato práce obsahuje žurnalistické texty v nichž figuruje alespoň jeden idiomatický výraz. Tyto texty tvoří malý jazykový korpus ilustrující skutečné použití tohoto výraziva. Tato práce může také sloužit jako příručka anglických idiomů s názvy zvířat.
