Captioning for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. On Example of the Documentary Berlin Babylon.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with closed captions, which are usually taken to address hearing impaired viewers and are also known as SDH (Subtitles for the d/Deaf and h/Hard of hearing). The results of this thesis are so-called “interlingual” captions in Czech language for Czech hearing impaired viewers for the German documentary with the title Berlin Babylon. The Czech subtitles, which include transcription of speech and information about sound effects and music, were made in conformity with needs of the deaf and hard of hearing persons according to the experience of relevant experts, published in English, German and Czech language. There is commentary of the designing of the Czech SDH, translation from German into Czech including translation problems and their solution in accordance with prominent both world and Czech translation theories in the thesis.

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá skrytými titulky, které jsou adresovány zejména neslyšícím a nedoslýchavým divákům. Výsledkem práce jsou takzvané „interlingvální“ neboli mezijazykové titulky v českém jazyce pro české n/Neslyšící a nedoslýchavé k německému dokumentárnímu filmu Berlín Babylon, jejichž neodmyslitelnou součástí je transkripce řeči, odkazy na hudbu a jiné zvukové efektů. Tyto titulky byly vytvořeny v souladu s požadavky a potřebami n/Neslyšících a n/Nedoslýchavých publikovanými českými i zahraničními odborníky na základě jejich bohatých zkušeností z praxe. Práce komentuje proces tvorby českých titulků, překladu z německého jazyka, překladatelské problémy a jejich řešení podle předních tuzemských i světových překladatelských teorií.
