Cosmogony and Anthropogony in the Book of Genesis and in Sethian Gnostic Texts

Abstract:

Cílem práce je na základě srovnání mýtů o stvoření světa a člověka obsažených v gnostických pramenech a knize Genesis ověřit židovské kořeny a předkřesťanský původ setovské gnóze, a dále nastínit možné důvody a příčiny gnostické reinterpretace knihy Genesis. V práci je nejprve krátce popsán fenomén gnosticismu a setovské gnóze. Následuje představení dějů pěti vybraných pramenů konvenčně řazených do tzv. setovské gnóze a některých, pro komparaci zásadních, pasáží z prvních kapitol knihy Genesis. Poté dochází k samotné komparaci pasáží z knihy Genesis a vybraných setovských textů, jež nastiňuje některé obecné znaky gnostické mytologie vzniklých na základě gnostické reinterpretace Genesis. Práce pokračuje krátkým exkurzem do výzkumu židovských kořenů gnosticismu před a po objevu gnostické knihovny poblíž egyptského města Nag Hammádí v roce 1945. Na závěr dochází k představení možností a důvodů gnostické reinterpretace knihy Genesis a možných příčin konkrétní podoby a konkrétních gnostických myšlenek, s přihlédnutím ke kulturnímu a sociálnímu kontextu gnosticismu.

Abstract:

The aim of this paper is confirmation of Jewish roots and pre-Christian origin of Sethian Gnosis based on comparison of cosmogonic and anthropogonic myths included in Gnostic source and the Book of Genesis and outline possibilities and reasons of Gnostic reinterpretation of the Book of Genesis. At first paper shortly describes phenomenon of Gnosticism and Sethian Gnosis. Paper continues by presentment of plots of the five chosen sources conventionally connected with so-called Sethian Gnosis and some important passages of the first chapters of the Book of Genesis. With that follows comparison of passages of the Book of Genesis and chosen Sethian texts which outline some of the general marks of Gnostic mythology based on reinterpretation of the Book of Genesis. Next point of the paper is short probe into research of Jewish roots of Gnosticism before and after discovery of Gnostic library near Egyptian city Nag Hammadi in 1945. Possibilities and reasons of Gnostic reinterpretation and possible cause of possible fashions of particular Gnostic ideas are introduced at the conclusion. Simultaneously paper deals with cultural and social background of Gnosticism.
