Sacerdocium et Regnum – Soul and Body: Sacred Kingship in Western Christendom and Its Changes during the 11th to 13th-Century Church Reform

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá tématem posvátné královlády v západním křesťanství a její proměny během církevní reformy 11.-13. století. Zaměřena je zejména na postavu panovníka a jeho posvátnost plynoucí z rituálu pomazání. V první části práce sleduje historický vývoj rituálu pomazání. Přes biblický text a Konstantina Velikého se dostává až do středověku, ve kterém je rituál pomazání znovu objeven u franckých panovníků. V této době se panovníci, s odkazem na Bibli, dovolávají funkce krále kněze a vytváří kolem sebe aureolu posvátnosti. Pomazání se stává legitimizační prvkem této posvátnosti. Během reformy 11.-13. století, které jsou věnovány zbylé kapitoly, je přehodnocována královská sakralita a význam pomazání. Reforma snažící se o očištění církve začíná přehodnocovat postavení panovníka v duchovním úřadu a snaží se degradovat jeho svatost. Církev je ale názorově nejednotná. Na jedné straně jsou klerici kritizující královskou posvátnost a koncept král-kněz. Na straně druhé stojí klerici, kteří přisuzují panovníkovi posvátnost, neboť je pomazaný Páně. Gregoriánské reformě se nepodařilo odstranit pojetí posvátné královlády a král nadále zastává církevní funkci.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with the theme of sacred kingship in western christendom and its changes during the church reform of the 11th to 13th century. It is focuses mainly on the monarch and his sacredness which flowed from the ritual of unction. In the first part, the thesis follows the historical development of the ritual of unction. Throughout the Bible and the time of Constantine the Great up until the Middle Ages, at which time the ritual of unction reappeared with the Franks Monarchs. At this time monarchs, according to the Bible, refer to the function of king-priest as one who has an aureola of sacredness around them. The unction becomes a legitimised component of this sacredness. During 11th-13th century reform, which the remaining chapters are dedicated to, not only was the royal sacrality overturned, but also the meaning of unction. The reform, tries to purify the Church, and also attempts re-evaluate the possition of the monarch in clerical office and it also tries to degrade his holiness. But the Church is divided in it´s opinion. On the one hand there are clerics criticizing the royal sacredness and the concept of a king-priest. And on the other hand there are clercs who atribute sacredness to a monarch, because he is The Lord´s anointed one. The Gregorian reform missed the oportunity to remove the concept of sacred kingship and therefore the king remained as part of the office of the Church.
