Abstract:

Práce se zabývá problematikou vyobrazovaní židovských postav v anglické literatuře viktoriánského období. Nejprve věnuje pozornost postavení Židů ve viktoriánském období a jeho vývoji v devatenáctém století. Dále představuje několik klasických děl anglické literatury,ve kterých se objevují židovské postavy a nastiňuje, jak byli Židé v anglické literatuře obvykle vyobrazováni. Hlavním cílem práce je představit židovské postavy v díle Charlese Dickense, konkrétně Fagina a pana Riah z jeho románů Oliver Twist a Náš vzájemný přítel. Pokouším se objasnit, proč Dickens vykresluje hlavní zápornou figuru v Oliveru Twistovi jako osobu židovského původu a proč se v jeho díle o několik let později objevuje neuvěřitelně kladná postava rovněž židovského původu.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the question of Jewish characters in Victorian novels. Firstly it attempts to introduce the Victorian society and the position of Jewish inhabitants in it and its developement throughout the nineteenth century. It also presents several English literary works, that present Jewish characters in them and outlines the way Jews were usually depicted in English literature. The goal of the thesis is to talk about the Jeish characters in fiction of Charles Dickens,focusing on the characters of Fagin and Mr. Riah of the novels Oliver Twist and Our Mutual Friend. I attempt to clarify the reasons Dickens had for depicting a major villain of Oliver Twist as a person of the jewish origin and the reasons why did the unbelievably angelic character of Mr. Riah appear in his novel several years later.
