Social interactions between an adolescent male and his parents in gibbons (family Hylobatidae)

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zaměřila na studium sociálních interakcí mezi subadultními samci kriticky ohroženého druhu gibona bělolícího (Nomascus leucogenys) a jejich rodiči. Cílem práce bylo popsat a porovnat výskyt čtyř vybraných sociálních interakcí – proximity, groomingu, sociální hry a agrese – a zahrnout vliv složení rodinné skupiny s ohledem na fázi vývoje vokalizace mláďat. Práce popsala sociální dynamiku v kompletní rodinné skupině, kdy byly interakce porovnány zvlášť vůči otci a matce. Zároveň byly porovnány interakce subadultních samců mezi kompletní a nekompletní rodinnou skupinou (v případě této práce bez otce). Pro dosažení stanovených cílů výzkumu byly použity metody přímého pozorování a sběru dat u dvou rodinných skupin v prostředí zoologických zahrad – Zoo Ústí nad Labem (kompletní rodinná skupina) a Zoo Ostrava (nekompletní rodinná skupina). Tento postup umožnil srovnání sociálních interakcí nedospělých samců jak v přítomnosti obou rodičů (kompletní rodinná skupina), tak i během absence otce (nekompletní rodinná skupina). Oba subadultní samci produkovali po celou dobu pozorování female-like great call. V rámci kompletní rodinné skupiny byly zjištěny statisticky signifikantní rozdíly v chování subadultního samce vůči otci a matce. To se projevilo častějším výskytem subadultního samce v blízkosti matky, a vyšší frekvencí jejich vzájemného groomingu. Vůči otci byl subadultní samec naopak ve větší vzdálenosti, i když s ním častěji prováděl sociální hru. Tyto výsledky poukazují na přetrvávající silný vztah s matkou, zatímco vztah s otcem byl ovlivněn vzrůstající distancí, pravděpodobně v důsledku napětí a počínající kompetice. Při srovnání obou rodinných skupin byly zjištěny statisticky signifikantní rozdíly v četnostech sociálních interakcí. Subadultní samec se vyskytoval častěji v blízkosti matky v nekompletní rodinné skupině, kdy s ní zároveň udržoval vyšší frekvenci groomingu a sociální hry, v porovnání s matkou v kompletní rodinné skupině. Absence otce tedy vedla v nekompletní rodinné skupině k ovlivnění vztahu subadultního samce s matkou. Srovnání frekvence agrese nebylo možné z důvodu nízkého počtu pozorovaného výskytu v obou rodinných skupinách. Výsledky prezentují rozdíly v chování subadultního samce vůči otci a matce a zároveň poukazují na rozdíly v chování v závislosti na složení rodinné skupiny. Tato diplomová práce zároveň představovala pilotní výzkum s cílem ověřit využitý metodický postup. Navržený postup umožnil kontinuální a systematický sběr dat, který poskytl ucelený pohled na sociální interakce uvnitř rodinných skupin.

Abstract:

The thesis focused on the study of social interactions between subadult males of the critically endangered white-faced gibbon (Nomascus leucogenys) and their parents. The aim of the thesis was to describe and compare the occurrence of four selected social interactions – proximity, grooming, social play and aggression – and to include the influence of family group composition with respect to the stage of development of juvenile vocalization. The paper described social dynamics in a complete family group, where interactions were compared separately towards the father and mother. At the same time, the interactions of subadult males were compared between complete and incomplete family groups (in the case of this work, without the father). In order to achieve the set research objectives, direct observation and data collection methods were used in two family groups in the zoo environment – Zoo Ústí nad Labem (complete family group) and Zoo Ostrava (incomplete family group). This procedure allowed comparison of social interactions of immature males both in the presence of both parents (complete family group) and during the absence of the father (incomplete family group). Both subadult males produced a female-like great call throughout the observation period. Within the complete family group, there were statistically significant differences in the behaviour of the subadult male towards the father and mother. This was manifested by a higher frequency of the subadult male in the vicinity of the mother, and a higher frequency of their mutual grooming. In contrast, the subadult male was more distant towards the father, although he was more likely to engage in social play with him. These results indicate a persistently strong relationship with the mother, whereas the relationship with the father was affected by increasing distance, probably due to tension and incipient competence. When comparing the two family groups, there were statistically significant differences in the frequency of social interactions. The subadult male was more likely to be around his mother in the incomplete family group, while maintaining a higher frequency of grooming and social play with her, compared to his mother in the complete family group. Thus, the absence of the father in the incomplete family group led to an effect on the subadult male's relationship with the mother. Comparison of the frequency of aggression was not possible due to the low number of observed occurrences in both family groups. The results present differences in the behaviour of the subadult male towards his father and mother and also highlight differences in behaviour depending on the composition of the family group. This thesis also presented a pilot research to validate the methodological procedure used. The proposed procedure allowed for continuous and systematic data collection, which provided a comprehensive view of social interactions within family groups.
