Sports Diplomacy as a successful means of warming relationships between defeated states? An example of selected US activities

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá tématem sportovní diplomacie, jako nástroje zahraniční politiky a jejího vlivu na bilaterální vztahy dvou znepřátelených států, v mém případě vztahy USA s Čínou, Íránem a Kubou. Během práce jsou analyzovány tři konkrétní případy americké sportovní diplomacie s výše uvedenými státy. První část je teoretická. Zde najdeme definici sportovní diplomacie, veřejné diplomacie a soft power. Veřejná diplomacie a soft power úzce souvisejí se sportovní diplomacií, kterou můžeme pochopit pouze tehdy, pokud tyto dva pojmy definujeme. Definovala jsem nástroje zahraniční politiky, které jsou použity v praktické části. Tato část je opravdu důležitá pro pochopení tématu práce a další části práce. Ve druhé části, která je praktická, se zabývám sportovní diplomacií v rámci zahraniční politiky USA. Existují také konkrétní případy americké sportovní diplomacie, která ji využila ke zlepšení vzájemných vztahů s Čínou, Íránem a Kubou. V tomto případě jde o pingpongovou diplomacii s Čínou, fotbalovou a wrestlingovou diplomacii s Íránem a baseballovou diplomacii s Kubou. Závěrem jsou zodpovězeny výzkumné otázky, které byly uvedeny v úvodu práce. Ve všech konkrétních případech jsem dospěla k různým závěrům o tom, jak sportovní diplomacie funguje. Jednoduše řečeno, s Čínou a Kubou byl sport úspěšným nástrojem zahraniční politiky, ale ne s Íránem.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis works with the topic of sports diplomacy as a tool of foreign policy and its influence on bilateral relations of two warring states, in my case the relations of the USA with China, Iran and Cuba. Three concrete cases of US sports diplomacy with the above-mentioned states are analyzed throughout the work. The first part is theoretical. Here we find the definition of sports diplomacy, public diplomacy and soft power. Public diplomacy and soft power are closely related to sports diplomacy, which we can only understand if we define these two terms. I defined the tools of foreign policy, which are used in practical part. This part is really important for understanding the topic of the thesis and the next part of thesis. In the second part, which is practical, I deal with sports diplomacy as a part of US foreign policy. There are also concrete cases of US sports diplomacy who have used it to improve bilateral relations with China, Iran and Cuba. In this case it is ping-pong diplomacy with China, football diplomacy and wrestling diplomacy with Iran and baseball diplomacy with Cuba. In conclusion, the research questions that were stated in the introduction of the thesis are answered. In all the specific cases, I came to different conclusions on how sports diplomacy worked. Simply put, with China and Cuba, sport was a successful foreign policy instrument, but not with Iran.
