Freedom and independence of the journalists in Ugandan TV station UBC TV

Abstract:

According to the theory of development journalism, individual journalistic freedom is inferior to the goal of media organization to promote development of the whole nation. The goal of this final thesis is to demonstrate the application of the proposition in the Ugandan stateowned TV station Uganda Broadcasting Corporation TV (UBC TV). On the basis of the theoretical context including the concept of development media theory, general characteristics of media organization and economic and political situation in Uganda, we set the goal of the research in the methodological part of the thesis: to find out the factors that journalists in UBC TV can see as limiting their individual journalistic freedom using the combined research method. The empirical part of the thesis is dedicated to the findings of the survey and qualitative interviews that show the influence of the government on work of the UBC TV journalists. This influence is a consequence of the state ownership resulting from Uganda being governed by only one political party since 1986. In the Czech context no research has been done yet on the problems of freedom of media in developing countries. This final thesis aims to contribute to investigation of the freedom of press in the third world countries as the topic is still up-to-date and thus relevant in the context of globalisation of all sectors.

Abstract:

Model rozvojovej teórie médií stavia individuálnu novinársku slobodu do podriadeného postavenia voči cieľom mediálnej organizácie prispievať k rozvoju krajiny. Cieľom diplomovej práce je zistiť, akým spôsobom sa táto téza uplatňuje v ugandskej, štátom vlastnenej televízii Uganda Broadcasting Corporation TV (UBC TV). Na základe teoretického kontextu zahŕňajúceho koncept rozvojovej teórie médií, všeobecné charakteristiky fungovania mediálnej organizácie a ekonomicko-politický kontext Ugandy sme v metodologickej časti stanovili cieľ výskumu: pomocou zmiešanej výskumnej stratégie zistiť, ktoré faktory vnímajú novinári UBC TV ako obmedzujúce ich individuálnu novinársku slobodu pri práci v štátom vlastnenej mediálnej organizácii v rozvojovej krajine. Empirická časť je venovaná zisteniam z dotazníkového šetrenia a hĺbkových rozhovorov, ktoré potvrdili vplyv vlády na prácu novinárov v UBC TV. Tento vplyv je výsledkom štátneho vlastníctva v dôsledku vlády jedinej strany v Ugande od roku 1986. V českom kontexte je problematika slobody médií v rozvojových krajinách úplne nepreskúmaná. Diplomová práca chce prispieť k skúmaniu slobody médií v rozvojových krajinách, keďže ide o otázku aktuálnu a relevantnú v kontexte globalizácie všetkých sektorov.
