The Assimilation of Synthetic Aperture Radar Satellite Data into the Simulation of Crop Model

Abstract:

The modelling of crop growth has experienced development in last decade and many scientists, involved in issues of food security and sustainable development, use it for yield forecasting. During last decades, many crop models were developed under the different algorithms and used in monitoring of agriculture, especially in yield forecasting activities. These models are able to simulate crop growth according to growth environment, but they are limited by spatial distribution of inputs like a soil moisture or nitrogen content. These perturbations can cause large errors in simulations and yield forecasting. However, new progress in remote sensing provide opportunities to correct simulation of crop growth by assimilation of satellite data into the models. Great deal of research studies was conducted on assimilation of biophysical variables derived from satellite optical images into the crop models with success. However, optical data are dependent on rate of cloudiness in atmosphere and necessary data are not always available for surface monitoring and biophysical variables estimates. Nevertheless, new possibilities arise with development of synthetic-aperture radar satellite imagery, like Sentinel-1 imagery, but utilization in crop modelling is idle and there is no remarkable progress in this field of study. Thus, the objective of this research is to explore possibilities of assimilation methods for the simulation of crop growth with utilization of synthetic aperture radar data.
