Social construction of casework with homosexual clients among helping workers

Abstract:

Diplomová práce zkoumá sociální konstrukci práce s homosexuálními klienti u sociálních pracovníků a psychologů. Zaměřuje se na způsoby, kterými sociální pracovníci a psychologové kategorizují, stereotypizují a idealizují práci s homosexuální klientelou. V teoretické části jsou popsány klíčové koncepty sociální konstrukce, kterými je kategorizace, stereotypizace a idealizace. Dále pak seznamuje s homosexuální menšinou a s její specifičností ve společnosti a popisuje významné přístupy a metody sociální práce v souvislosti s homosexuálními klienty. Výzkum práce je kvalitativní a byl realizován polostrukturovaným rozhovorem s 5 sociálními pracovníky, 5 psychology/psychoterapeuty v 8 různých zařízeních a 5 klienty. Získaná data jsou interpretována pomocí otevřeného a axiálního kódování a jsou rozdělena do 3 kapitol, dle dílčích výzkumných otázek. Výzkumem bylo zjištěno, že pomáhající pracovníci konstruují práci s homosexuálními klienty analogicky, jako s heterosexuálními klienty, ale více si uvědomují a přemýšlejí nad svojí rolí ve vztahu a k potřebám homosexuálního klienta. Reflektováním odlišností homosexuálních klientů přizpůsobují volbu použitých technik a postupů práce, které v některých případech i kombinují. V závěru práce je podrobně zodpovězena hlavní výzkumná otázka a také jsou uvedena doporučení pro praxi a další výzkum.

Abstract:

Master thesis explores social construction of casework with homosexual clients among social workers and psychologists. It focuses on means by which helping workers categorise, stereotypise and idealise the work with homosexual clients. In theoretical part key concepts of social constructions, namely categorisation, stereotypisation and idealisation, are described. Further, homosexual minority and its particularity are mentioned; and finally, significant accesses and methods of casework regarding homosexual clients are introduced. Research part of the work was qualitative and was realised by partly-structured interviews with 5 social workers, 5 psychologists (or psychotherapists) at 8 different institutions, and 5 clients. Data obtained are interpreted by open and axial coding and divided into 3 chapters according to sectional research questions of the work. The investigation found out, that helping workers construct their work with homosexual clients similarly to heterosexual clients. Nevertheless, helping workers are deeply aware of their role and thing more of it regarding the necessities of their homosexual clients. Based on differences of homosexual clients, consisting in their specific problems, helping workers adopt the choice of used techniques and work flow; in some cases their combine the techniques as well. In the conclusion the main research question of the work is answered; and, based on the findings of the work, some recommendations for the praxis and further research are introduced.
