The retrospective evaluation of adolescents on the influence of the YouTube platform at the time of identity formation

Abstract:

Autoři studií Ergen (2019), Aran-Ramspott, Fedele a Tarragó (2018) i Pérez-Torres, Pastor-Ruiz a Abarrou-Ben-Boubaker (2018) poukazují na vliv sledování youtuberů na mladou populaci uživatelů. Jde například o napodobování mluvy, chování, inspirace v herních strategiích, ale i v sexuální orientaci. Jiní autoři upozorňují také na rizika spojená s přijetím youtubera za svůj vzor a nekritické přijímání jeho postojů a chování (Burroughs, 2017; Lange, 2014; Martínez & Olsson, 2018). Za klíčové pro utváření identity považují autoři (Langmeier & Krejčířová, 2006; Vágnerová, 2005) období mezi 15-20 rokem života s důrazem na významnou roli vrstevníků, za ty mohou být považováni i youtubeři podobného věku. Cílem této studie je nahlédnout na chování raných adolescentů na platformě YouTube v souvislosti s formováním vlastní identity z pohledu dospělých jedinců. Pro hlubší proniknutí do problematiky, zachycení osobních zkušeností a vlastního zhodnocení jednotlivců byl zvolen kvalitativní výzkum založený na polostrukturovaných rozhovorech s celkem pěti respondenty mezi 18-20 lety, které byly analyzovány metodou zakotvené teorie. Participanti ve svých 14-15 letech používali platformu YouTube především za účelem inspirace ve svých tehdejších zálibách. Byli si vědomi vhodného i nevhodného obsahu vyskytujícího se na platformě, a přestože někteří z nich sledovali kontroverzní videa, považovali je pouze za zábavu, nikoliv za inspiraci. Významnou roli v používání platformy hrál sociální kontext, tedy přátelé, kteří doporučovali videa ke zhlédnutí, a blízká až přátelská vazba vytvořená sledujícím k samotnému youtuberovi. Na platformě hledali častěji inspiraci pro vyjádření své identity v názorech, chování i zálibách než u svých přátel. Při zpětném hodnocení sledování videí participanti usuzovali, že šlo v některých ohledech o ztracený čas, nicméně nevnímají negativní dopady platformy na jejich chování či sociální kontext. Identita v tomto případě není formována vlivem sledování videí, nýbrž si adolescenti v tomto období jejím prostřednictvím upevňují a rozšiřují v té době své oblíbené zájmy a záliby rezonující s tehdejší identitou.

Abstract:

The authors Ergen (2019), Aran-Ramspott, Fedele and Tarragó (2018) also Pérez-Torres, Pastor-Ruiz and Abarrou-Ben-Boubaker (2018) are pointing out the influence of watching youtubers on young population of users. It is for example imitation of expressions, behaviour, inspiration in gaming strategies also in sexual orientation. Different authors draw attention to risks connected with accepting youtuber as a role model and uncritical accepting their attitudes and behaviours (Burroughs, 2017; Lange, 2014; Martínez & Olsson, 2018). The age of 15-20 years old is crucial for identity formation (Langmeier & Krejčířová, 2006; Vágnerová, 2005) and authors emphasize the role of peers, which also youtubers at the same age could be considered for. The aim of this study is to look at behaviour of young adolescents on YouTube and the impact on identity formation from retrospective view of adults. For better and deeper understanding this question I have decided to use qualitative method of grounded theory. In total five respondents between 18-20 years old have undertaken semi-structured interview. Respondents in their 14-15 years old have been using YouTube for inspiring themselves in their former activities. They were aware of appropriate and inappropriate content presented on the platform. Eventually if there were respondents who were watching controversial videos, they considered that as entertainment rather than inspiration. Social context of watching YouTube had an important role in this study. Especially friends which were recommending videos to watch and exceptional relation between adolescents and youtubers. Adolescents were more often searching for inspiration to express their identity in opinions, behaviours, and hobbies from YouTube rather than from their friends. From the retrospective view some of respondents considered the time spend on YouTube as lost time, nevertheless they are not aware of negative consequences on their behaviour or social relations these days. At this context identity has not been formed by watching YouTube videos but strengthened and extended in coherency whit their interests and hobbies in their 14-15 years old.
