Laterality and directional preference in training of riding horses

Abstract:

Cílem disertační práce bylo zjistit, jak vrozené behaviorální tendence, jako je lateralita a směrová preference, ovlivňují chování a výkon jezdeckých koní. Doktorská disertační práce shrnuje výsledky studie analyzující faktory, které ovlivňují úspěšnost v překonávání překážek v soutěžích na vrcholové úrovni (Western European League). Jedním z faktorů byl směr nájezdu na překážku (zleva, zprava nebo rovně), tj. většinově monokulární či binokulární vnímání překážky během odhadování odskoku, jako možný indikátor mozkové laterality koně. Lateralita je u zvířat i člověka široce rozšířený a studovaný fenomén, založený na adaptačních výhodách stranové specializace a nesouměrnosti mozkových hemisfér, smyslových orgánů nebo částí těla. V předkládané studii elitních skokových koní neměl směr nájezdu na pravděpodobnost chyby na překážce významný vliv, k chybám (pád břevna či překážky, odmítnutí poslušnosti nebo vyhnutí se skoku) však ani na této úrovni nedocházelo v průběhu soutěže zcela náhodně. Koně v průměru chybovali na 7,85 % skoků. Dosažené skóre bylo ovlivněno čtyřmi z testovaných faktorů, a to zpravidla odlišně v prvním a druhém kole dané soutěže. V obou kolech měla zásadní vliv na pravděpodobnost chyby zkušenost jezdce, čím více startů v kariéře jezdec absoloval, tím méně chyb dvojice, jak v prvním kole (F (1, 7649) = 6.17, P < 0.02), tak v rozeskakování (F (1, 931) = 7.05, P < 0.01) dosáhla. V prvním kole pravděpodobnost chyby na překážce mírně stoupala s pořadím skoku v trase parkuru (F (1, 7649) = 5.29, P < 0.0001, GzLMM; PROC GLIMMIX, SAS), přičemž nejčastěji k chybám v prvním kole (F (5, 7649) = 2.51, P < 0.03) docházelo na kolmých skocích s vodou (0.125 ± 0.021, LSMEAN ± standardní chyba), naopak nejméně často u triplebarů (0.037 ± 0.015) a zdí (0.048 ± 0.020). V obou kolech soutěžící utržily více chyb na skocích v rámci kombinací (dvojskoky, trojskoky). Největší chybovost byla zjištěna u prvních skoků v kombinaci (první kolo 0.095 ± 0.016; rozeskakování 0.043 ± 0.008) nebo na druhém skoku z dvojskoků (rozeskakování 0.055 ± 0.020) ve srovnání s nejmenší pravděpodobností chyb na jednotlivých překážkách (první kolo 0.057 ± 0.007, F (5, 7649) = 5.29, P < 0.0001; rozeskakování 0.100 ± 0.027, F (1, 931) = 3.39, P < 0.04). V rozeskakování překvapivě méně chybovali koně, kteří projeli trať rychleji (F (1, 931) = 6.66, P < 0.01). V prvním kole rychlost jízdy pravděpodobnost chyby neovlivňovala a nepredikovala ani rychlejší čas v kole druhém (r = 0.26, P < 0.01). Ostatní testované faktory (pohlaví koně/jezdce, zkušenost koně) úspěšnost překonání překážek ve sledovaných soutěžích neovlivňovaly. Některé chyby byly však stále pravděpodobnější a nebyly náhodné, právě proto může vhodné zaměření tréninku zlepšit výkon a bezpečnost dvojice na soutěžích. Druhým stěžejním tématem doktorandského studia byla magnetorecepce neboli směrová preference a vnímání magnetického pole Země. V předkládané práci jsou popsány metodiky sběru dat a datové soubory dvou studií zaměřených na vnímání magnetického pole u jezdeckých koní. Studie jsou aktuálně ve stavu analýzy nasbíraných dat. Doktorská disertační práce dále krátce shrnuje další výsledky, které vzešly z dat nasbíraných za účelem výše popsaných studií (genderové otázky ve skokových soutěžích), nebo byly řešeny v rámci zahraničních stáží (percepce a management koní). Předkládané výsledky jsou důležité nejen pro stavitele skokových soutěží, ale také pro přípravu tréninkových plánů, stejně tak každodenní manipulaci a práci s koňmi. Jejich aplikace do praxe může zásadním způsobem zlepšit welfare koní.

S výjimkou magnetorecepce byly studie uvedené v doktorské disertační práci již publikovány, nebo jsou v recenzním řízení v impaktovaných vědeckých časopisech.

Abstract:

The aim of the dissertation was to find out how innate behavioral tendencies, such as laterality and directional preference, affect the behavior and performance of riding horses. The dissertation summarizes results of the study analyzing the factors that affect the performance success at the top level in show-jumping competitions (Western European League). One of the factors was the direction of the approach to the obstacle (left, right or straight), mostly monocular or binocular perception of the obstacle during the estimation of the approach, which would be a possible indicator of the horse's laterality. Laterality is a widespread phenomenon in animals and humans, based on the adaptive advantages of lateral specialization and asymmetries in the cerebral hemispheres, sensory organs or body parts. In the present study of elite jumping horses, the direction of the approach did not have a significant effect on the probability of faults on the obstacle, but faults (fall of obstacle, refusal to jump or avoidance of jump) did not occur randomly at this level. On average, horses were wrong at 7.85% of jumps. The achieved score was influenced by four of the tested factors, different for the first and second round of the competition. In both rounds, the rider's experience had a major impact on the probability of faults. The more career starts the rider completed, the fewer faults gained in the first round (F (1, 7649) = 6.17, P <0.02) and in the jump - off (F ( 1. 931) = 7.05, P <0.01). In the first round, the probability of faults increased slightly with the jump order of the obstacles in the jumping course (F (1, 7649) = 5.29, P <0.0001, GzLMM; PROC GLIMMIX, SAS), with the most frequent faults in the first round (F (5, 7649 ) = 2.51, P <0.03) occurred on vertical jumps with water (0.125 ± 0.021, LSMEAN ± standard error), on the contrary the least in triplebars (0.037 ± 0.015) and walls (0.048 ± 0.020). In both rounds, the competitors made more mistakes when jumping over combinations (double jumps, triple jumps). The highest faults rate was found for the first jumps in the combination (first round 0.095 ± 0.016; jump - off 0.043 ± 0.008) or on the second jump from double jumps (jump – off 0.055 ± 0.020) compared to the lowest probability of faults on individual obstacles (first round 0.057 ± 0.007, F (5, 7649) = 5.29, P <0.0001, jump - off 0.100 ± 0.027, F (1, 931) = 3.39, P <0.04). Surprisingly, the horses that run throught the jumping course faster (F (1,931) = 6.66, P <0.01) reached less faults. In the first round, the overall speed did not affect the probability of faults, nor did it predict a faster time in the second round (r = 0.26, P <0.01). Other tested factors (sex of the horse / rider, experience of the horse) did not affect the success of show-jumping in the analysed competitions. However, some mistakes were not accidental, which is why the appropriate focus of training can improve the performance and safety of the pair in competitions. In both rounds, the rider's experience had a major impact on the probability of faults (more starts meant fewer faults) and more faults were generally in combinations (double jumps, triple jumps). In the first round, the probability of faults on the obstacle increased slightly with the order of the jump in the competition, with the faults most often occurring at vertical obstacles with water, and least on the triplebars and the walls. Surprisingly, there were fewer mistakes in the jump off, which passed the round faster. In the first round, the overall riding speed did not affect the probability of faults, nor did it predict a faster time in the second round (jump off). Other tested factors (sex of the horse / rider, experience of the horse) did not affect the success in jumping obstacles in the analysed competitions. Abstract:

work describes the methodology of data collection and data sets of two studies focused on the perception of the magnetic field in riding horses. The studies are currently in the state of analysis of the collected data. This work also briefly summarizes other results gathered from studies described above (gender issue in jumping competitions), or data collected during my two foreign internships (perception and management of horses). The presented results are important not only for the builders of jumping competitions but also for the preparation of training plans for horses, as well as for the daily handling of horses. Their application in practice can significantly improve the welfare of horses. With the exception of magnetoreception, the studies presented in the dissertation have already been published or are under review in impacted scientific journals.
