The War with the Multi- Animal: Media Archeology of Czech Environmental Poetry and Prose after 2000

Abstract:

Aktuální společensko-politický vývoj a s ním související akcelerující změny klimatu přinášejí zdroj inspirace pro současnou populární kulturu, či lépe řečeno: frustrace z těchto změn se do současné populární kultury mnohdy promítají, nebo jsou skrze ni svými autory a autorkami ventilovány. Současná česká krásná literatura, jak próza tak poezie, dnes stále častěji akcentuje témata spojená se změnami klimatu, ať už ve formě popisu současného neutěšeného stavu, či předstírání vizí budoucnosti mnohdy až dystopického charakteru. Práce se zaměří na vybraná literární díla a za pomoci přístupu mediální archeologie (Huhtamo, Kittler) a mediálního materialismu (Parikka, Gabrys, Peters) rozkryje, jakou roli hraje v jednotlivých narativech o klimatických změnách technologie. Jejím účelem však není pouhá taxonomie různých způsobů, jakými současná česká literatura hovoří o klimatu a technologiích, nýbrž také ukázat, jakým způsobem je, v duchu kulturního materialismu (Williams), zprostředkován vztah mezi textem a jeho společenským kontextem.

Abstract:

Current socio-political developments and related accelerating climate changes pro-vide a source of inspiration for contemporary popular culture, or better said: frustrations from these changes are often projected into contemporary popular culture, or are vented through it by their authors. Contemporary Czech fine literature, both prose and poetry, today increasingly accentuates topics connected with climate change, either in the form of describing the current unhappy state or foreshadowing visions of the future, often of a dystopian nature. The work will focus on selected literary works and with the help of the approach of media archeology (Huhtamo, Kittler) and media materialism (Parikka, Gabrys, Peters) will reveal what role technology plays in individual narratives about climate change. However, its purpose is not simply a taxonomy of the various ways in which contemporary Czech literature talks about climate and technology, but also to show how, in the spirit of cultural materialism (Williams), the relationship between the text and its social context is mediated.
