The Role of Play and Playfulness in Educating Children to Sports and their Connection to the Mental Health of Adolescent Athletes

Abstract:

Cílem tohoto výzkumu bylo zjistit specifický vliv hry na účast v kompetitivním sportu v adolescenci, a na základě retrospektivních výpovědí respondentů také v dětství. Studie se zaměřovala na identifikaci role hry ve vztahu k dalším faktorům ovlivňujícím sportovní účast, důležitost hry pro respondenty, změny v důležitosti hry v souvislosti s věkem a případný vliv hry v adolescenci prostřednictvím hravosti. Dále bylo záměrem zjistit, jak se prezence hry v tréninku odráží v motivaci a vnímání stresu u respondentů. Výzkum použil kvalitativní tematickou analýzu podle Braun a Clarke (2013) a teoreticky se opíral o Maxwellovu koncepci kritického realismu (2012). Studie zahrnovala 17 respondentů ve věku 13 až 15 let, kteří byli dotazováni ve čtyřech ohniskových skupinách se třemi až pěti účastníky. Nejdůležitějšími faktory sportovní účasti byly hra, kompetence a přátelství. U respondentů byla v dětství zaznamenána vysoká důležitost hry, která klesala s věkem směrem k adolescenci. Trénink v adolescenci by měl nadále zahrnovat prvky hry, jako je bezpečné prostředí a pozitivní afekt. Studie zjistila, že spíše tyto charakteristiky než hra samotná, mají vliv na motivační orientaci a vnímání stresu u respondentů.

Abstract:

The aim of this research was to investigate the specific impact of play on participation in competitive sports during adolescence, as well as in childhood based on retrospective reports from respondents. The study focused on identifying the role of play in relation to other factors that influence sports participation, the importance of play for respondents, changes in the importance of play in relation to age, and the potential impact of play during adolescence through playfulness. The goal was also to determine how the presence of play in training is reflected in the motivation and perception of stress among respondents. The research used qualitative thematic analysis according to Braun and Clarke (2013) and theoretically relied on Maxwell's conception of critical realism (2012). The study involved 17 respondents aged 13 to 15, who were interviewed in four focus groups with three to five participants. The most important factors for sports participation were play, competence, and friendship. The respondents placed high importance on play during childhood, which decreased with age towards adolescence. Training during adolescence should continue to include play elements, such as a safe environment and positive affect. The study found that these characteristics, rather than play itself, have an impact on motivational orientation and stress perception among respondents.
