Does pansharpening affect NDVI vegetation index values?

Abstract:

Téma bakalářské práce je zaměřené na posouzení vlivu vybraných algoritmů pansharpeningu na hodnoty vegetačního indexu NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) vypočteného z pansharpovaných multispektrálních družicových snímků s vysokým prostorovým rozlišením. Zájmovým územím práce je část města Neratovice, které se nachází v ČR ve Středočeském kraji. Pro výpočet NDVI byl konkrétně použit družicový snímek pořízený družicí Landsat 9 dne 5. 2. 2023. Ve stejný den proběhlo i terénní měření. Pro terénní měření byl použit přenosný přístroj Trimble GreenSeeker umožňující získat hodnoty NDVI přímo v terénu. Cílem bakalářské práce bylo porovnat naměřené hodnoty NDVI v terénu s hodnotami, které byly vypočteny na základě snímků upravených vybranými algoritmy pansharpeningu (IHS, Gram-Schmidt, Brovey) v softwaru ArcGIS Pro. Teoretická část závěrečné práce je zaměřena zejména na problematiku pansharpeningu a jeho dostupných algoritmů. Navazující praktická kapitola shrnuje pět základních metodických kroků. Nejprve bylo provedeno terénní měření vegetačního indexu NDVI ve vybrané lokalitě přístrojem Trimble GreenSeeker. Následoval preprocesing družicových snímků a příprava vstupních dat pro další zpracování. Poté byl proveden pansharpening snímků vybranými algoritmy, na který navazoval výpočet vegetačních indexů NDVI. Posledním metodickým krokem bylo statistické porovnání NDVI hodnot získaných terénním měřením a hodnot odečtených ze snímků vylepšených algoritmy pansharpeningu. Z výsledků bakalářské práce vyplívá, že nejpřesnějším hodnoceným algoritmem, který nejvíce přibližuje hodnoty vegetačního indexu NDVI terénnímu měření byl algoritmus IHS. Na druhou stranu je patrné, že se přesnost NDVI významně liší napříč vybranými algoritmy (IHS, Gram-Schmidt, Brovey). Navíc velmi nízká hodnota RMSE (0,04) mezi terénním měřením a hodnotami NDVI vypočtenými z družicového snímku vylepšeného algoritmem IHS prokazuje využitelnost pansharpeningu při prostorovém vylepšování družicových snímků, které zaručuje zachování původní spektrální informace.

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis is focused on the assessment of the influence of selected pansharpening algorithms on Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) values calculated from pansharpened multispectral satellite images with high spatial resolution. The area of interest of the work is a part of the city of Neratovice, which is located in the Czech Republic in the Central Bohemia region. Specifically, the satellite image acquired by Landsat 9 on 5 February 2023 was used for the calculation of NDVI. On the same day, field measurements were also performed. For the field measurements, a portable Trimble GreenSeeker instrument was used to obtain NDVI values directly in the field. The aim of the bachelor thesis was to compare the measured NDVI values in the field with the values that were calculated on the basis of images adjusted by selected pansharpening algorithms (IHS, Gram-Schmidt, Brovey) in ArcGIS Pro software. The theoretical part of the thesis focuses mainly on the issues of pansharpening and its available algorithms. The subsequent practical chapter summarizes five basic methodological steps. First, a field measurement of the vegetation index NDVI was performer at a selected site with the Trimble GreenSeeker instrument. This was followed by preprocessing the satellite images and preparing the input data for further processing. Then, pansharpening of the images was performed by selected algorithms, followed by the calculation of NDVI vegetation indices. The last methodological step was the statistical comparison of NDVI values obtained by field measurements and subtraction from the images enhanced by the pansharpening algorithms. The results of the bachelor thesis show that the IHS algorithm was the most accurate algorithm evaluated, which most closely approximated the NDVI vegetation index values to the field measurements. On the other hand, it can be seen that the accuracy of NDVI varies across the selected algorithms (IHS, Gram-Schmidt, Brovey). Moreover, the very low RMSE value, between the field measurements and the NDVI values calculated from the satellite image enhanced by the IHS algorithm, demonstrates the usefulness of pansharpening in spatial enhancement of satellite images, which guarantees the preservation of the original spectral information.
